Why does newly uploaded movies mark as played

Hi, I was wondering why when I upload a movie to my server about 70 to 80 percent of the time it marks it as played when it has not been played yet. And sometimes when I go in and mark it as not played I came come back later and find it marked as played again.

Thanks Dave

Hi there, please go over an example. thanks.

Dave did you ever have the movie before?

Are you using any watched syncing utils like trakt?

Is anyone else sharing your account/login?

I never had the movies before, I don't use trakt and no one is sharing my account I do have a separate account for my sister-in-law.

A example would be I just put up three hallmark movies and after they were scanned into the system they were marked as watched by the system before anyone had a chance to look at them.

It doesn't always happen but enough that it is a hassle.

Hmm, I've never seen or heard of this happening with no trakt or past versions of the movies.

If you switch to a different userID are they showing as watched then as well?
What version of the server are you using?

I have noticed that newly added movies or TV shows get marked as "watched" until all the metadata has been found and then, after the import is complete, the movie or show goes back to unwatched. It may just be a way for Emby to indicate the the import is incomplete.

I do not really think that is what is happening here but it "could" be so I decided to mention the behavior. For what it is worth I kind like that behavior. It seems to make sense for me.

I just checked the other users and one that was marked played and they did not have it marked played. It seems to be on the main account. I am on version 4.5.4.0

Thought I might mention I do upload the movies with meta data already in the folder. I might have to wait and see if it changes back.

Don't really see how this is possible as Emby uses the providerid to mark as watched in userdata.  If the item has never been in the library then there is no way to have ever had that providerid.

Is this data being provided to Emby with an NFO already in the folder?

If so can you upload one of the NFO files?

Yea first thing is, use the metadata editor to look at the external id's of your movies and see if any are incorrect.

If yes, then this likely explains why you're seeing this, and then you can focus on where the bad external id data came from.

If then we'll keep looking for other causes.

Thanks, didn't see anything special in it but wanted to check.

My guess is your providerids, Do all of your media item get this?

  <imdbid>-2</imdbid>
  <tmdbid>-2</tmdbid>

So every item add will have the same ids, wrong ids.

  <id>-2</id>

Not positive how much ID is used.

I would assume all the Links if clicked on in Media are broken also.  Or at least all items with wrong ids.

I checked the external Ids for a few and notice some that are marked wrong have a -2 for the number under both the IMDb id and The Moivedb id would this be what you are talking about?

Yes so to Emby this id makes all items the same item because they have the same id.

What ever provides your nfo metadata needs to write properid or nothing in those fields.

So if I left those wrong blank that would fix? Is there a program to scan and fix these?

I am using a program called Media Center Master to gather the info..

So do I but do not write nfo files.  Is the xml correct and the nfo is wrong?

In theory yes as there would be no providerid so the server would make up some fake id to track it.

movie.xmlHere is a copy of the xml from the same movie, I don't see anything wrong but you might.

Looks fine and has all the ids.  What generate metadata method are you using in MCM?

I can't reproduce what you are getting with the same example in my MCM.  It writes this to nfo.

	<id>tt10887358</id>
	<id moviedb="imdb">tt10887358</id>
	<imdbid>tt10887358</imdbid>
	<id moviedb="tmdb">795982</id>
	<id moviedb="themoviedb">795982</id>
	<tmdbid>795982</tmdbid>

But you could alway install the xml metadata plugin and not worry about nfo files.  That is what I do.

Ok I can have MCM stop making the NFO file and install the xml metadata plugin, Now MCM makes a xml file too, do I just leave it?

I wish there was a either or, but MCM base metadata is xml that write to other formats so there is no way to disable xml.

Now your issue will be all items in your library will have to be Refreshed (probably won't work do to existing wrong ids), or remove from library, library scan to purge them from database, ensure bad nfo files are deleted then re-add to library.

Now you will run into watched item being unwatched as they will have a properid that does not sync with what your userdata has (bad ids).
