where can I find a step by step on how to add a new remote user

Recommended Posts

I have an Emby server that has been running for 1+ year and no problems. Running on Unraid container and it works just fine. Users have been on the local network.

I just can't seem to find anywhere a "How To" on adding a remote user for access to the server.

OMG this is so basic but just can't find anything.

I want to add a user who is not local but remote - how do you connect the, in this case, Firestick/TV to my server?

To use connect - do I have to be registered or something?

I must be thick or something I am just not seeing it ....

To add to the complexity, My son runs his own Emby server and when I login to Emby, and enter the connect code, at the website address https://emby.media.com/pin,  it only shows my sons server.

Have I not registered my server or something???

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks in Advance

Hi,

I would suggest taking a look at our Knowledge Base starting with
https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159034-quick-start

To add users (local & remote) follow this guide
https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001160237-users

Before any users can connect remotely you have to set the server up to work remotely (doesn't out of the box)
https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44002137137-remote-setup

Let us know how you make out or what you need additional info on.

I am looking for the same answer.  In the near future I will be adding a nephew so he can view his dad's home videos..........  I am looking for the option to send an invite via Email.  I don't see that option........

Here is from your instructions.

Hi, I'm going to be editing that KB article shortly to change it a bit as it doesn't work exactly like that any more.

But a couple of questions for you.

Do you need to use Emby Connect?
Do you have a domain name for your house/Emby Server?  If so you don't need EC.

Do you use a DDNS service which a lot of home routers can do by default if you setup an account?  If so you can use that DDNS address in Emby.

Either of the two methods mentioned above allows a user to enter a URL (name vs IP) into an app or browser and get to your Emby Server.

If you don't have or don't want to do that then assuming you have setup Remote Access and tested it to work.
https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44002137137-remote-setup

So with remote access working but no "name" to IP translation (dns) you would want to use Emby Connect.

In this case setup a local user on your network and then ask the user to go to http://app.emby.media/ and create an account.  Then have them send you an email with their username which you can fill into to the optional Emby Connect username field.

So if you will only have a user or two (or three) using you server Emby Connect might be easiest setup wise but if you have a half a dozen user or more you should setup your server with an actual DNS name and have users use this and login directly.

Let me know what might not be clear about any of this.

Thanks for the quick response as usual....

Not sure,  I use it  when I am out of my local network....

No

I used to use one that came with my Asus router, but too old and tired to set it up again.

I have a security cam that captures my bird feeders.  All I had to do was have someone in a different state, install the same app.  I then used that app to send an email invite to that person so they could watch my cam.

Anyway to do that real easy??

what do I put into these boxes?  I can have him install the Emby app, (not sure what device he has yet), then what do I do?

So, I have him create an account?  Then use his user name?

Are these birds stealing food? Does your security system automatically contact police about theft when these guys trigger your security system?

Any particular worst offender?  Blue jays, cardinals, black birds, pigeons?

Sorry couldn't resist.

I too have a couple of "weird" cams setup that have nothing to do with security in Emby via the IPTV plugin which makes it easy for family members to see "live actions" going on.

Ya, I have had the same problem. I can't send an invite.

I had the individual register in Emby Connect. Got a response that all was good.

What is the next step???

From a network perspective I don't see how the Emby Connect app makes the connection to my server.

I use a reverse proxy to my Emby server through a well known DDNS service and use SWAG to handle the details.

I run a PFSense router, as well, on my server which works well. (I actually get close to the 1G service offering 😀).

Does that provide any further details you need?

I am running on a Dell R710 server with Unraid - using dockers.

We did use Emby connect but there is no option to send an invite.

Seems this is an ongoing issue for several users.

Thanks in advance

You simply create a user on their server, and enter their emby connect email address into the second field on the screen where it asks for that:

https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001160340-emby-connect

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

Thank you, that was the key to answer my question.

It appears that all the new user has to do, is create a connect account, then the rest falls into place....

Exactly.  I just follow the following steps:

1) Have person create an account at https://emby.media/community/index.php?/register/
2) Send me their username.
3) I create their user, putting the Emby connect username in that Optional field and set what they have access to etc.
4) Tell them to connect as a test.

Done.

Ok, fianlly getting back to this .... my son still can't access the server.

(By the way my Emby key expired yesterday - no warning - no email-no nothing. I have purchased a lifetime key but I have yet to receive my key in an email. How long does this take? I purchased this hours ago....I did email the billing support address. Nothing yet..😠) Just one more thing to contend with.....

All of the next stuff happened before the key expired. So thats not it.

I went through the step by step (including having him register for connect, added him to the user list etc.

Now when he tries to log in, he gets this:

image.thumb.png.a49693757f6551a81ea0e1a1402b44ac.png

It doesn't seem to find the server.

The server is running and my daughter can access remotely no problem.

We have tried a PC, phone and Firestick. Same result.

One thing is odd, when he is on my WIFI, same network as my server is on, his phone connects.

Are we sure there isn't something on the server side that needs to be done?

My Emby server is on a reverse proxy ....perhaps he is getting the <local> address instead of the proxy address???

I'm running out of options here.

Thanks

If you used the same email address it will be the same key so nothing for you to do or change.

Ca you properly get to your server from the Internet using your domain or IP (not Emby Connect)?
If so can you login in with the local username and password (not Emby Connect)?

Posted

Yes, if I turn off my wifi on my phone and just use the cell signal, I can login myself to the server.

That's the only way for me to test it as all of my various and sundry devices and pc's run on my network.

Seems to work.

(One odd thing though, my user name didn't come up in the first screen, had to login manually. But worked.

By the way, you are absolutely right .....the key was automatically populated into my Emby instance.

Thanks for that (I didn't think to actually look at the server settings - I did and there it was.

There are settings that you can use to control if a user is shown for local AND remote on the login screen.
image.thumb.png.0fa2824c0e84a6cfca4b0283b1369927.png

For the Emby Connect login try this:
Remove the optional Emby Connect username from your USER account
Click save button
Add the optional Emby Connect username back to your USER account
Click save button

Retest login in with Emby Connect and let us know if it now works.

Thanks
