OrionStarr 0 Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 So, I used Emby for a couple of years now and then I had a Hard drive crash. I was unable to restore repair the harddrive so I bought a new one and have been setting everything up. Everything is now working fine EXCEPT the Emby server! I have searched through hundreds of forum and help files and tried everything and am now at my wits end! I have tried running and installing the server with all Firewalls shut off with no success. I have made sure my ports were opened on my router and I have tried multiple version of Emby as well. I have made sure that Windows Firewall (when running) had EmbyServer as allowed through. When I try to start the server through either the Start Menu or by going directly to the folder and running it, it simply does not start. Never shows up on Task Manager Applications or Processes. I know there has to be something I am missing but for the life of me I cannot find it. I was able to install and run Plex server but hate them and do not want to go back to them (but the wife needed the Roku running) so I know that it cant be my media sharing or DNLA or such. Please anyone help me!! My specs: Registered Windows 7 Ultimate with ALL updates current and SP1 installed and updated Archer C7 TP Link Router (both ports 8096 and 8920 enabled) It cant possible be my hardware as I was running Emby fine before replacing the Harddrive If anyone can tell me what I am missing or give me any more ideas to try I would be most grateful!

Guest Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 Have you tried Troubleshooting Compatibility for Emby.. I had this issue awhile back on Windows 10.. it was solved that way. It still could be something else. Even install permissions.. but that would be the first thing I would check out. May also take a look at your logs and see if anything is standing out.. They will probably want to see them here as well.
OrionStarr 0 Posted April 4, 2021 Author Posted April 4, 2021 The server installs fine, simply will not run. There are no logs generated I have checked all of the Emby folderss and it simply does not have anything or even a logs folder. The installer logs end with this: MediaBrowser.Server.Installer.exe Information: 0 : Release count: 30 MediaBrowser.Server.Installer.exe Information: 0 : Version is 4.5.4.0 MediaBrowser.Server.Installer.exe Information: 0 : Downloading Emby Server version 4.5.4.0 MediaBrowser.Server.Installer.exe Information: 0 : Successfully downloaded version 4.5.4.0 MediaBrowser.Server.Installer.exe Information: 0 : Creating directory C:\Users\Try\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server MediaBrowser.Server.Installer.exe Information: 0 : Starting extract package. My hardware has not changed since I was last running Emby (last week) except for a clean Win7 install
Happy2Play 9782 Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 Is there a server log generated when you launch Emby? May need to look in Window event viewer also.
Guest Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 You will have to open the folder where Emby is installed, and find the Emby.exe (in C:\Users\Yor Account Here\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\system ). Once you do, you will right-click and see the option. Follow the prompts from there. One indicator also would be if you have to run the program as an Administrator. You can set these options in the Properties as well and run the troubleshooter as well. Your logs are in 'programdata/logs' folder. The installer looks fine so I am going to assume that running it in compatibility mode is not going to need to be done but sometimes it helps too for whatever reason..
OrionStarr 0 Posted April 4, 2021 Author Posted April 4, 2021 Made sure the compatability was set to Win7 and all users. Selected Run as Admin. Tried to start the program and it flashes on Task manager processes for about 1 sec and then disappears. Still nothing...
Guest Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 I know this sounds redundant, but try the troubleshooter and see if it makes a difference and simply right-click and select Run As Admin.. They react differently in some cases. ( Not for sure about your version of Windows either but the accompanying DLL may also need this IF it shows settings, used to be a thing in WIndows ) Like Happy2Play said above too Look for Errors in Administrative Events in the Event Viewer... See if anything is related. The logs for Emby can point to something too or even what is failing. Lastly.. I forgot to ask about Security Software.. anything in those logs even in Windows Defender as quite as it is, It is known to quietly sabotage operations sometimes..
OrionStarr 0 Posted April 4, 2021 Author Posted April 4, 2021 I tried the troubleshooter on every setting with no success. Tried Run as admin (right click) early on and again just now. Windows logs show no error codes for Emby I remember the first time I installed (Dec 2018 apparently) I had no problems like this. I was far less tech savvy then .
Guest Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 (edited) Which version are you running ( or trying to run rather )? <--- just seen that above.. Is windows up to date all the way? When you installed did you run as an admin? Edited April 4, 2021 by Guest
OrionStarr 0 Posted April 4, 2021 Author Posted April 4, 2021 Currently trying Emby 4.5.4 but I have tried earlier version inclding 4.3 and 4.0 Windows is completely up to date verified by Windows Update, Microsoft Driver Checker and Intel Driver Checker Just tried a brand new install running the installer as admin with still same problem. Forgot to mention that I know it is not my Homegroup/Sharing options as VLC on my phone and my Bluray player can both access and play videos on the network
Guest Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 No, that would not prevent the server from running either.. I think only Visual C++ Runtimes or something it uses would be the only thing.. I can think of at this point. The icon should appear in the tray when you run it.. and stay there.. If you could not access those shares it simply would not be accessible.
speechles 2055 Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 Windows 7 is definitely the problem. It is no longer supported and windows updates can/will break it and Microsoft has stopped caring. Is there a reason you have not upgraded to Windows 10? https://github.com/dotnet/core/issues/4894
rbjtech 5284 Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 Lets check the basics - from Windows 7 command prompt type - netstat -a | find "8096" If it comes back as 'listening' - then emby is setup and running. Next is to ensure the Windows f/w and or Anti-Virus s/w is allowing access. Temporarily turn this off - and see if you can then access emby. (on a browser on the same machine) ie http:\\your_local_ip_address:8096 If this works, then turn the f/w back on and let us know - then we can advise what you need to do to create the necessary rules as for some reason they have not been created properly.
ebr 16185 Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 Hi. For Windows 7 you need to be sure you have SP1 with ALL Windows updates. This can sometimes take several iterations of checking for and applying Windows updates. Have you ensured you have all those?
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 5, 2021 Posted April 5, 2021 Have you tried running the server from a command line? If so, what do you see in response to typing the command? Have you looked in the Windows system log to see if any errors are reported there when the server fails to start? Paul
OrionStarr 0 Posted April 6, 2021 Author Posted April 6, 2021 Well, I am still not sure what the problem was, but it is now fixed. I installed the Kodi server to check it out. It installed and told me to restart the computer. After restart I got the "Configuring Windows" screen and then it rebooted and ran the Kodi server, I checked it out for a while and have mixed feelings about it. With the Kodi server running, I tried another uninstall/reinstall of Emby. This time, Emby ran without a problem! I was even able to uninstall Kodi and after rebooting Emby still runs. Perhaps there was something in my router or 1 minor missed update that Win7 somehow missed. Thanks to everyone for their help/ideas/ and support!! LOVE Emby and the community!!!
Guest Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 I would best this had to do with the runtime libraries which are always updating or installed upon request/need..
