Activity log inconsistant in what is captured

Is it normal that the activity log doesn't seem to capture all the same actions for all users?

In particular, it seems like the "is online from" with IP information isn't captured for some of the users, but I'm not clear why that might be. For most users, I will see an "username is online from client" and an IP address line. then another entry if they start playing something. For a couple of them, I'll just see the username is playing..." entry, there's not the initial connection or the disconnection message that seems to happen for everyone else.

Is this something I have set in the user profile or something mis-configured on my end?

Thanks

Hi there, can you please go over a specific example? Thanks.

Hmm...copy and paste out of the activity log screen is...broken in a weird way, doing that "treat text like an image" thing which is going to make this a bit difficult, but in the activity log I can see a set of entries for a user like (I'm just making a set up based on what I see in the Activity screen):

For some users though, I never ever get the "is online" or "disconnected" entries, so I never get an IP address either. There will just be "is playing" and "is finished" messages, but never any indication they connected/disconnected.

I just wonder why the apparent inconsistency.

Another question would be what client/app are they using?

Eyeballing through the logs, looks like I'm seeing it from an Apple TV, an iPhone, and a Roku (built in to a TV, if that matters). Xboxes, web clients, android clients (a tablet, phone, and Shield) seem like they are all fine.

Do these client remain in Active devices?  I know my iphone/android/browser/roku clients connected/disconnected/play via activity and active devices

Nope, that's part of what I find strange about it. All the sudden there will just be one of those clients in Active Devices playing something, but there's no corresponding "is connected from" in the Activity history, at least not anywhere near by, chronologically speaking. People would have to be leaving TVs and devices on, and in the app to show as an active device presumably, and some times these are clients that don't show up for long stretches of time (say, at least a day, if not longer), so I doubt it's something like that. So it just makes it odd that there'd just be "playing" entries. I've scrolled back through the log a good amount trying to find connect entries for those clients, presumably one is in there, but it's not anywhere near the playing entries that I can see (or at all, now that I'm looking for them, but I haven't gone back to epoch either).

It's almost like the devices never properly disconnect (since there's no disconnect entry either), but they aren't showing as active any more either. So when they come back, they just act like they are already connected and keep going from there.

It's certainly not a showstopper problem or anything, it's just odd to me.

You only get that extra detail from devices that can establish a web socket connection with the server. I suppose we could just stop doing that and make it consistent so that there will never be a question about this.

Ah, ok. I assume the extra detail means the connect/disconnect, not the IP.  I can go either way on the connect/disconnect messages, why I really care is I like being able to easily find client IPs. If you also displayed the IP information in the "playback started" entry, I probably wouldn't have cared at all that I couldn't see connect messages. I find the IP information to be useful (I keep a vague eye on it, in case they get compromised), so that's really what I'm after.

Thanks!

You could give the "Playback Reporting" plugin a try.  It runs its own database so it only tracks activity from the time of install.

I'll take a look at it. Thanks!
