Ridiculous TV Show Matching / Categorization of Downloaded TV Shows - Using the "By Directory" Browse Option Doesn't Help at All, Either.

A recent copy of files I transferred from a rip of my mixed "The Office" DVD and Blu-ray collection from an old media server has shed more light on an on-going categorization problem I've had with Emby since moving from Plex to Emby Premiere around a year ago. I ripped them myself and used standard filenames such as "The.Office.S01E01.Pilot.DVD-R.1080p.mkv" or whatever else is required by most media matchers. And while indeed Plex had some laughable categorization errors when it came to media - TV in particular -  correcting it was easy enough and I could also opt to just view the files as-is by directory and play them as I wished. (At least in the older versions of Plex prior to their team making the laughable decision to disable plug-ins and remove a lot of power from their users).

In Emby I can't do this folder view/play at all it seems. My "The Office" episodes all show up as episodes of a show called "Scream: The TV Series". I have three folders total added for TV but that view by folder shows "TV", "TV", and "Scream: The TV Series". Very bizarre. The "Scream: The TV Series" also does NOT show up under "TV Shows" media just under its own folder it seems. See the screen shots below.

I would have hoped that going to "Folders" would allow me to view a list of the media files in each directory and give me a directory hierarchy. I would then be able to open the media file I want to watch. Instead, it's just an even worse view of media matching. Is there some way to view the directories and files? This would seem to be a standard feature in a media streaming software; after all if it views directories and media files and matches them up with each file, and pulls meta data from IMDB and TVDB  one would think you could choose filenames directly.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I can go through and rename everything manually, edit the metadata downloaded by the show so it matches my show, etc. but that seems counterintuitive to what should automatically happen in this media organizer and player. OR, to view a directory itself and play the files like what we had in (older) Plex and Xtreamer devices,

Thank you!

This is the area where alphabetically it would be located under "TV Shows" for "Scream: The TV Series" (which SHOULD be "The Office" US TV show).

Here's the directory view where you see "TV", "TV", and "Scream" instead of another "TV" folder. These "TV" folders each exist in each one of the separate mount points where each has a "TV" directory. What kind of folder view is this? Even choosing "By List" will show the matched/rendered metadata information instead of the folder name and video file names.

Here's a search for "Scream TV" (it has thumbnails t movies or shows I don't even have downloaded):

Search for "The Office" (it shows under Scream TV series, but the filenames had "The Office" in the filename 😞

Okay so  a little about your directory structure would help..

EX: \\TV\Archer\Season 01 - Espionage Never Tasted So Salty\....for each folder you have added

and filenaming convention as used in all cases

EX: .....\Archer\Season 01 - Espionage Never Tasted So Salty\Archer S01E01 - Training Day.mkv and so on..

Coudl it be the additional notation is messing with it identifying correctly?

As it looks like something is screwy with the paths as they are added to the Library in question...

Your metadata should look something like this..

03_23.2021_184405.jpg.511c7ef3f13ad5debb5e4799ed62431c.jpg03_23.2021_184433.jpg.a80a1db90a1cf7736cafbfeba6921018.jpg

..As basics.. BUT in order to embed this I had to have my names right in the files. There are additional options to have catalog ID and IMDb number embedded as well which seems to help in Emby. (Screenshots are from MetaX) Ignore my short description should be a tagline.. 😜

Embedding the data usually addresses the issue at its source, and keeps the data no matter what happens to your media server or which one you use.

EDIT: I think in 'folders' view, once you get to the files it shows up just like it would under 'shows'.. That is what mine is doing.. my folder structure though follows the basics however.

Currently Emby does not support loose episodes.  All Shows require a minimum of of a Series folder.  No sure on why everything would be shown in Scream beside misidentification.

Thanks guys. I am looking further into it. I will manually rename as much as I can and see what comes up. I think part of this problem is that I had also ripped all of the extra content such as deleted scenes, the "webisodes" (of which there are like 10x 2 minute shorts each), "PSAs", and lots of other content made for the show. Most of these extras have some kind of IMDB and TVDB entries but aren't part of the primary show title ID- and so I will go thru and edit the metadata on each one. I'm reading about how to format for 'Specials' on TV from that TV naming guide. The Plex scripts were editable and easy to add new media categorization regexes- can we do this with Emby?

If Emby doesn't support loose episodes in the 'TV' media library, does it in anyway allow for just random loose media? I for instance have a bunch of BBS documentaries that are categorized as all kinds of crazy television names. If I stick all of this in 'Mixed Media' is there anyway I can browse to its directory ("BBS Documentary") and play the files individually?

Thanks a lot

I know that here there are  ways to include these items for regular movies.. but I am not for sure if it works for TV.. they do state that each type needs a folder in the movies section..

On the Documentary.. I added mine to a hare by themselves.. Identified them and plugged in tags..and added them to a movie library named Documentary.. In some cases you may have several parts to one.. that has aired on TV.. Those still work in TV.. So you could add them to a TV Library with a different name.. and they still show up and do correctly.. the same as say three part TV movies.. harder to work with after they are joined.. and are usually tagged as being 'Season 01' or S01.. You get backdrops and metadata that way..
