Hi, I'm struggling trying to properly add metadata to a song that contains multiple Artists as shown on MusicBrainz.org. As you see below... The song "Escape" is released by both "3LAU" and "Paris & Simo" featuring "Bright Lights".

Here's how I'm writing the metadata.

When I use the identify feature and find the song on MusicBrainz.org, Emby only recognizes the 1st artist as the Album Artist and does not display the 2nd artist at all.  This could be seen in the graphic below.

Is this a bug? Is there a way to show that a recording is released by multiple artists as shown on MusicBrainz? Any help would be great.  Thanks.

This may be due to who had the release rights or who simply released the EP.. I have literally almost 10,000 files that are a complete match for the situation... Seeing it being from Revealed kind of clued me in as well.. ( !@#$ Beatport!!!..-and about 25 other distributors.. LOL ) ... 😜

As a joint venture between two artist covering different areas and featuring another.. Much like hip-hop/rap releases they cut the track in a studio together.. it's edited and mastered, then produced and is usually released as a single or on an EP or album.. Finding this information out do to the way they have mangled some of the metadata in some cases.. changing the order of the artist or even using / and a comma to separate them when they even have a featuring has become a big issue with me trying to properly curate the files metadata.

AND we can wind up being at the mercy of which data has been entered and is present within the online databases. We also have to rely best on what is listed where we buy them, since they do not always sell a file which has the metadata inside or art ( or have not on the regular ) it can be hit and miss with them..

BUT.. in this case I would expect it to be 3LAU as the album artist or the one who put together the EP or release.. and the individual artist tag to give credit to who has created each song.. ( Different still from a compilation since those songs were created by those artist for the release in question ) Fixing each one of my files to fill in the gaps has been very hard to do along these lines...

You will also wind up with artist lists which include multiple entries for the same artist and the next artist as well. (3LAU then 3LAU. Paris and Simo.. )

Hi, rather than having the artist list come from the musicbrainz database, I would suggest tagging your audio files properly with the multiple artists, then run an emby server library scan and it will pick up the changes. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

Your last statement of "You will also wind up with artist lists which include multiple entries for the same artist and the next artist as well. (3LAU then 3LAU. Paris and Simo.. )" is exactly what I was experiencing before trying to edit the metadata.  It doesn't sound like you've had much success with trying to organize the "joint venture" recordings.  I was hoping that someone in the forum had a solution to this issue. I figure out a hack, I'll be happy to share. Thanks for responding.

I tried your suggestion and found that Emby was not picking up the 2nd joint artist "Paris & Simo".  In the metadata "3LAU" and "Paris & Simo" is separated by a comma. I think the comma is possibly confusing Emby and just skipping the 2nd joint artist.  I changed the comma back to a "/" and I now see both artists as Album Artists.  I think this is do-able.  Thanks.

Although, right now the track artists metadata are not displaying in the order as they are listed in the metadata.  Is there a way to force my display order?

I think I see what's happening... It appears that Emby recognizes "Paris & Simo" as 2 separate artists instead of a single artist group. Is there a way I can force Emby to recognize them as a single group? Is there a way to escape the "&" character so that Emby doesn't recognize the group as separate artists?

We don't split on the & character, so that's not the reason. I would try using Picard to see if your tracks have an Artists tag embedded (plural), in addition to the singular Artist tag.

There is only one of two ways.. ( I have used ) Change album artist to the artist who has main credit for the release or under who's name it is distributed so if it is listed under 3LAU's EP's or singles then that is the proper album artist. The credit for the song still remains in the artist tag. with credit to 3LAU ( for example ) as the album credit.

When you grab it from an online source it may inject both artist.. this separates them out and effects searches and listings as shown. So I used what I mentioned above.. this way I could still search for the name of a song.. album or artist get results in explorer and have it credit to the right artist for the release and show within their discography or releases... If they did not release it but worked on it .. will show up in a search.. but does in 'appears on'.
