m.a.biglin 1 Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 I have some shows that I ripped the DVD/blu-ray's and used Handbrake on with the same settings I have used many times. H.264, MPEG-4 with AC3 audio (sometimes AAC) and MP4 Container. For some reason, they direct play on Emby theater (windows PC), Emby shield TV, Plex (windows PC), Plex Shield TV, and Plex Roku. Emby Roku transcodes them. Could this just be the fact that my Roku 4 Is now 6 years old or is it more likely that it is something in how I am Handbraking the files?
rbjtech 5284 Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 The ffmpeg transcode log will tell you exactly why they are transcoding - if you can post we can advise further. It is likely the h264 'profile' that you are using in handbrake is not compatible with the older Roku but the log will confirm this.
speechles 2055 Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 You can enable the stats for nerds inside the Roku app to find out why. When playing an item press DOWN on the Roku remote. This will open the OSD. Look for the gear/cog icon and click it. This will open the playback settings menu. On that menu find the stats for nerds and enable it. This will provide a panel on screen with details about the playback of the item. You can see the Audio Codec causes the transcoding above.
m.a.biglin 1 Posted March 22, 2021 Author Posted March 22, 2021 Thanks. "Stats for Nerds" shows my Frame-Rate as the reason for the transcode. "Video Framerate not Supported" I attached a log file. The shows I'm mainly having issues with are 1960's black and white shows. (Wild, Wild West, Addams Family, etc...) More modern shows using the same handbrake settings seem to direct play just fine. ffmpeg-transcode-ac460174-9898-4e71-87f8-a5c3491e7f8e_1.txt
speechles 2055 Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 (edited) "AverageFrameRate":23.985744,"RealFrameRate":120 Is this really 120 frames per second? The average from rate seems to think more correct. But Emby will determine support for the device based upon the RealFrameRate. How did that get to be 120? FYI, There are no Roku models that can play media at 120 frames per second (besides Roku TV). Not yet for the sticks or set-top-boxes. Edited March 22, 2021 by speechles
m.a.biglin 1 Posted March 22, 2021 Author Posted March 22, 2021 Weird part is only emby roku shows that. Plex (roku) and other emby players all show normal frame rates while direct playing.

That information isn't coming from the player. It is coming from the server who got it from ffprobe. It has to be something with the settings in how this item was encoded.
