CharleyVarrick 283 Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 (edited) This has nothing to do with Emby, and slightly to do with media. Within the standard Windows user folders, I always observed an odd behavior and wonder if someone has an explanation, and better yet, a solution to it. My download folder always remember last windows position/size. It also auto sort any new content I throw at it Those 2 behaviors are highly desirable to me. My Videos folder never remember last position/size. It also does not auto sort new content. Actually, all other folders behave like this. Not so great Why doesn't Videos folder behave like Downloads ? Edited March 22, 2021 by CharleyVarrick
Guest Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 In my system.. I don't actually use the links on the Start Menu.. ( That is where I tested this ) but just checking it out.. ( Am guessing that is where you are opening them from... ) My Videos folder view settings can be set to do the same thing as the Downloads folder.. (Details View, Sort by Date Modified - descending ).. This folder (Downloads) would never change how the views are set no matter what I have ever done with my computer.. ( but it decided to keep them this time.. starting with build 1903 this behavior was by default. When I move and close using the Red X, each window behaves the same way.. They reopen where they were left. If you open consecutive windows ( say with Windows Key + E ) usually the last one closed is where it opens again In the old days you had to close a window a certain way (shortcut key, file menu, or Red X) .. to get them to behave differently or to remember size and placement.
CharleyVarrick 283 Posted March 22, 2021 Author Posted March 22, 2021 (edited) No I dont (never) use win start menu to navigate to folders, I have file explorer pinned to taskbar, set to open on This PC And all my everyday folders are displayed by default in left side menu. My system is in French but I believe content is pretty much the same for everyone My folders windows are all set to sort by name, auto sort is suppose to work like this: You have sub folder (or files) named "2" "3" "4" and you throw it a "1", it should pop in before 2, not after 4 like it does mostly everywhere. I'm ending up they show 2 3 4 1 (if I hit refresh, it goes 1 2 3 4, but I'm thinking I shouldn't have to hit refresh. Edited March 22, 2021 by CharleyVarrick
Guest Posted March 23, 2021 Posted March 23, 2021 (edited) That is normal for my system... in my 3 TB size music archive it has thousands of folders all to be sorted alphabetically... As far back as I can remember, it has always taken a refresh to add it in to the folder hierarchy or listing to reflect the same view.. If you are merging folders the new folders will be highlighted and the new folder will show up at the end as new.. and then they are put in order when you come back or refresh.. OR if the system refreshes itself noticing a change in the files size or data.. Most of the time you won't notice this because it happens so quickly, ( Over a network with many files/folder you get a loading bar the location area of explorer, just like when doing a search in a large directory full of data ) but there is also a ( or used to be ) a timing for this refresh to take place.. too much and the system makes a bunch or request unnecessarily to little you have to go manual.. I do not believe the timing option is available anymore. Honestly that is typical windows behavior to me, there probably will not be a solution.. As far as I can tell windows actually behaves this way for a reason.. even letting you go into new folders without losing focus on new folders and files being created. After a refresh you usually lose focus on those files/folders.. and they become part of the 'herd' or regular listing.. Capitalizing a letter in a folder name usually takes a refresh to display as well.. but performing the operation seems to have taken place. as far as the arrangement of those items within your navigation pane.. Those items are actually put there with hard links I believe.. I remember this from modifying and hacking systems to pieces making custom configured systems and appearances as well as behavior.. There is a different hierarchy to what is listed there because it is 'SUPPOSEDLY' commonly used folders for people using windows and those are listed together and in a certain order ( I believe these settings are in the registry or used to be - to being written into the explorer.exe file now ) Windows took some of the ability to modify certain areas away from the modders because of security reasons.. but some of those reasons were actually false positives which triggered other issues.. Now you have to hack explorer.exe just to modify its appearance.. and switch icons. Sounds stupid.. but I hide the pane ( most people use it..) and I use Windows Key + E to open Windows explorer.. I think the navi-pane is hidious honestly.. and I miss my modified systems.. custom everything.. I loved that about Windows. as a trade-off though Windows did incorporate several options.. Just like going black.. but I still miss that sort of thing... Everytime there a system update though we had to repatch our systems.. because of encrypto-checks, certain files would also be invalidated after a disk scan.. and have to be replaced.. was work.. but worth it.. You can create shortcuts for those folders and assign short cut keys speeding your access as well. EDIT: ALSO try going to Options and changing this one.. Open each folder in the same window.. If it is set to open each one in its own windows its behavior may be different is considerations to size and placement of how it is open.. Edited March 23, 2021 by Guest
