abailes 1 Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 Hi, I'm having a annoyingly intermittent, but persistent, problem with my server and playing of files not from the beginning. It is most noticeable when I try and resume playing a TV show, but it sometimes happens when I fast forward a show too. This is happening amongst a number of different playback devices. The problem is that it will play happily for somewhere between 15 and 45 seconds and then stop. It stops transmitting from the server to the device. If I pause and play again, nothing happens. If I choose a different Quality setting, it will do the same thing - play for 15 to 45 seconds or so and stop. This doesn't seem like a big issue, but it is really restricting my use of Emby. I don't want to start watching a show unless I am sure I am going to be able to see the end of it. Any thoughts would be very welcome Thanks

denz 501 Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 (edited) Are there any issues with your wifi ? What emby apps are you using? Did you check the dashboard does it say is it direct playing or transcoding ? Edited March 19, 2021 by denz
abailes 1 Posted March 19, 2021 Author Posted March 19, 2021 Its not the wifi, I have a good mesh of Google / Nest Wifi and no other problems - and this has been happening for months. It happens on both Emby for Android and on the Emby app for the Amazon Firestick. It is transcoding. Is it bad form to post Log files here? Do they contain any personal information I should be aware of?
abailes 1 Posted March 19, 2021 Author Posted March 19, 2021 I read the help topic vis-a-vis the privacy around logs. Here are a few in a row of when it happened this morning ffmpeg-transcode-f3f6911b-3cd8-418f-ac76-f5b2681754b9_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-b11686af-7dee-4c10-8ab1-09e023a97549_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-2e6021df-794c-4b13-a632-cae51624a34b_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-6493c232-513e-4a0b-9051-d4d83a160329_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-2a0a2a98-6824-4124-b9c6-cc02e26e4299_1.txt
Luke 42083 Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 Hi, is this all from inside your local network?
abailes 1 Posted March 19, 2021 Author Posted March 19, 2021 Yes. Same device, all within a few minutes as I repeatedly tried to make it work.
denz 501 Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 All the devices should direct play unless the file is not supported unlikely now. When you play something on the android mobile go to the web page on another device and in the dashboard if you click on the information it should say why it is transcoding. remove private info and attach it here or I think you cam PM luke
abailes 1 Posted March 19, 2021 Author Posted March 19, 2021 Thankyou. It says "Media bitrate exceeds limit". Can I change the limit somewhere?

One is in the server where you can set limits to users and the other is in some playback devices under Playback Settings.

HI, I would start by configuring the in-app quality setting. You can do this in the video player directly. I would try setting it to Auto. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks !
abailes 1 Posted March 29, 2021 Author Posted March 29, 2021 Hi Sammy, Thanks for your interest, I was considering starting a new thread. I have discovered the following: 1) This is not a limits setting, none of the settings boxes have a number in 2) Some of my devices at home do Direct Streaming, others Transcode. This is a Transcode issue only. I have a feeling Transcoding happens where my device has a poor wifi chip (like my 3-year old tablet). If I turn Transcoding off, then those devices do not play properly (audio plays, but video immediately freezes) 3) I have watched the Transcode buffer on the server (in the device on the server dashboard) whilst watching the show and it all looks great, it is transcoding happily quicker than it is playing. But when it hits a certain point - usually when the buffer is between 1:30 and 2:00 where the show just stops on the device. Now that I understand more of what is happening here, I was going to try and search for other threads that may explain it. Any ideas you might have would be excellent because this is driving me a little insane. Thanks
