Consolidating drives?

Recommended Posts

I am going to be consolidating all my drives into one drive. Is there a way to change just the drive letters on everything in Emby so I don't have to set everything back up again, like my collections etc etc? So basically I will be going from having data on drives; E, F, G, H down to having everything on drive; D

Hi.  You may want to put this off until after 4.6 is released as that should make your collection migration much easier.

Now, as for really nipping this in the bud long-term, I highly suggest using some sort of drive pooling solution so you never have to worry about this again.  You can add, remove, consolidate physical discs and never have to change the configuration of anything.

Thank you for the rapid response. How long until 4.6 is out?

Sorry, I don't know that at this point.  In the meantime, I would make sure you store images and metadata with your media and make sure it is all how you want it.

Will have to dig through the forum to find the database queries for this but you will have to Edit database entries and library config files.

So can you explain your setup a bit?
Running Windows?
How many different paths or mount points do you have setup for you different libraries?
Are you now using drive pooling to combine multiple drives?
Are all library paths the same except for the drive letter?

Sorry didn't see this until now. I am running in windows 10 I have 4 drives I'm moving down to one drive so let's say drive letters E F G H all data moved to drive D. I'm not using pooling or raid in anyway. Library paths have slight differences like F:\Video\TV Shows / G:\Video\Box Sets etc etc

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Honestly the best and safest method is just to move the data and let Emby rescan it from it's new location.
If you have NFO files and graphics saved with your media you can greatly speed up the new library scan by going in the library config and turning off all meta-data providers.
Allow only the NFO read and NFO save options to be enabled.

Try a test by turning off the meta-data providers as mentioned above and move half dozen movies or a couple of TV shows as a test and then either wait for RTM to pick them up or run a library scan.  They should load up quickly this way.

You may want to check this setting and adjust based on what you want this outcome to be for any media without an NFO (just in case)image.png.f28a3f897441bad5a1d59ad0f6753078.png

When done turn back on your meta-data entries you had turned off.  If need be take a couple screen shots of your settings before you changed them so you can put them back the same way afterwards.

You don't think using a DB browser and changing the paths would be a good idea?

Make a copy of your library.db and then give it a try.
I would only try changing a few the first try.

Ok moved everything and the cache is rebuilding itself but I have one oddity maybe you can help me with.

I like the old school way box sets were done so I'm still using that method. I have a library named "Box Set" and I have folders under that with different collections. like "Star War" for example. In the Star Wars folder is a folder for each star wars movie. I'd like them to show in proper order so I edited the metadata and put "Sort Title" 1 through 11. Before I add the movies to a collection they display properly in the "Box Sets" library but once added to a collection they go back to year based sorting. How can I fix it?

I'm not sure I follow here.  Box sets are gone and replaced with Collections (same outcome) for end users in the latest version of Emby Server.

As an example for Star Wars take a look at the collection info here: https://www.themoviedb.org/collection/10

That should be the same order showed on your system as well as that the "official" collection order. The original 1977 Star Wars is listed first not 4th because it's showing the order you would have seen them in at the theater had you watched each movie at the time of release.

It's possible in the future to re-order collections (been asked for) but for now it uses the year/collection order.

Basically I have nested collections

\Videos\Box Sets\Star Wars

\Videos\Box Sets\Marvel

etc etc

The library points to \Videos\Box Sets\

I don't let Emby Automatically create my collections.

So once I manually add items to the box sets they display in year order. Which with movies like Star Wars or Marvel can be pretty annoying if you want to watch/display them in the proper orders.

So if I get you right, for right now at least we can't use "Sort Title" in a collection and expect it to do anything? How long do you think until it's implemented?

What you described are not "Collections" in Emby terms.  They are just folders with items in them.  So no collection-specific functionality would apply to them.

There is a Sort order in Collections (Edit Metadata>Display order, defaulting to Release date, change to Sort name). Need to add those manually. It applies throughout your libraries, though.

I think many of us have resorted to making a Playlist for those, and then rearranging order as seen fit.

Thank you but I don't have a collections folder to edit the metadata on, only my box set library.

Where? Which library view? Folders view?

I do but I don't have the collections library displaying, I use box sets to get to my box sets. I like the old way Emby did box sets even right down to the xml files.

I'm sorry, but as @cayars , I'm kinda confused, likely due to the terminology.

IF you don't use Collections library AND don't make Collections (in Emby terms) BUT use normal library instead, where do you have problem sorting those titles? HOW are you browsing that BoxSet library?

Ok thank you, figured out I need to turn collections back on in the home screen to be able to see it in the meta manager, pretty silly since it's still there just hidden, once I did that I changed display order on the ones I wanted and hid collections again and it's fixed. Thank you very much for all your help!

Just so you know, you don't have to have Collections showing in the main menu (My Media).
Collections will also show up as a tab in the Movie Library.

Each user can also choose to group movies by collections as well in the main view using this from the 3 dot menu.

That would show only the collection in your movie view vs all the movies individually.

PS sorry for any confusing on the sort order already covered.  You can change it but it's system wide.  It doesn't allow re-arranging specific items like you can in a playlist which is what I was trying (badly) to convey.
