dimitrik 14 Posted March 10, 2021 Posted March 10, 2021 I recently set up a new server on an AMD Ryzen system with an old AMD GPU (a Radeon HD 7850 since new GPUs are impossible to find at the moment). I wanted to setup hardware acceleration using DXVA since it seems to be the most flexible option since my GPU is old and does not natively support anything other than mpeg2 and h264. But I cannot find any option for DXVA, only for AMD options. Any idea what I could do? Thanks in advance for any help!
Luke 42085 Posted March 10, 2021 Posted March 10, 2021 Hi there, did you follow our hardware acceleration setup guide? https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001160148-hardware-acceleration-overview
dimitrik 14 Posted March 10, 2021 Author Posted March 10, 2021 Hi Luke, yes I did. There are no particular installation instructions for DXVA though, or did I miss something?
Carlo 4561 Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 I think what Luke is pointing out is that for AMD we support AMF (AMD Advanced Media Framework) and not DXVA. Don't mean to throw salt on a wound but for video processing AMD is sort of bottom of the barrel and you would usually be much better of with a modern nVidia or Quicksync based setup. There is only so much that can be done software wise when the hardware doesn't support needed features.
dimitrik 14 Posted March 12, 2021 Author Posted March 12, 2021 (edited) Understood thank you for this, good to know. Of course I'd have better luck winning the lottery than finding a modern nvidia card these days. And I'd probably need the winnings to pay for it! But my HTPC has an old nvidia card (a 660ti) and an i7-2700k, so I can use both quicksync and nvenc. It would mean running the server in the HTPC though, which then means keeping it always on, which I'm not sure about. My desktop has a Ryzen 3700x which can also crush transcoding on software, though that's also not optimal. Oh well! Edited March 12, 2021 by dimitrik
