Embyweb "sort by" works, but selected criteria not displayed

This is so simple I must be missing something

When in a library, say movies, the default sort by is by title; as far as I can see, its the only sort by that visually works.

All other sort by do not give any visual hint of the sort. Using any of the following* sort criteria seems to changes the list order, I do not see any indication or cues of it

*(Date added, date played, imdb rating, parental rating, play count, release date runtime)

For ex,  when sorting by date added, I would expect to see a date added under media tiles.

When sorting by IMDB rating, I again do not see this rating displayed under media tiles.

The issue is not Emby not actually sorting by different criteria, it likely does sort correctly.

Issue is no matter which sort order is used, the only info showing under media tile posters always remains the same, that is title and release year.

Yes, but the order is different, according your sort method.

So, when you select "IMDB Rating", item with highest rating will be first in the list. When "Date added", most recent item will be first etc.

All of that is easily checked by entering any item Detail view.

Yes, that's why I said it does not "visually" works (does not display the sort criteria).

As for "easily checked", I beg to differ; displaying the sort order criteria under those tiles, that would be easy, not displaying it makes it invisible, therefore not easy.

Similar to a huge excel file without header

I suppose that's a matter of opinion, I reckon it does "visually" work as items are reshuffled and sorted according chosen method, and I prefer seeing "Alien, 1979" as opposed to "Alien, 25.11.20" when sorted by Date, for example. But as I said, I guess it all boils down to personal preference.

mmm

imagine a moment if sort by title would NOT show the title, yes, they're sorted, but you have no clues where you stand.

That's exactly how all sort by works, except for by title.

I suppose the main problem is screen real estate as it would likely require an extra text row, albeit very small.

I see what you mean with the example given, solution would be sort by with option to display sort criteria (or not).

I also agree with you that how my media is displayed on my side is ALL about personal preference, but preferably mine.

I'm reminded of the old joke: "...and now some sport results: 7-6, 24-10, 2-1..."

Judging by all of the above, my thread is not so much "what am I missing here" but more of a Feature Request.

If a mod could move it over there, It'll hopefully get a few Likes, for what that's worth.

Hi, so what you're saying is you would like it to say something like "Sorted by Title, Sorted by Title Desc, Sorted by Date, etc" in the header or somewhere at the top of the page?

No, but see actual values for the criteria selected underneath items.

Yes like GrimReaper says: A quick mockup

ie: If movie library sort by is set by imdb rating (and btw, it already show sort) this would be the result.

Yes that was going to be my comment that the sort already shows.

I don't get what you're showing in that picture?

EDIT: Oh never mind, I get it now, you're showing the actual IMDB rating.

Haha

But as Grim pointed out, if sort by selection is date added, showing a date added under the posters might not be as discreet, or god forbids, as pretty.

Hence my suggestion for a toggle on/off (display the sort by value) to please everyone and your mom.

Personally, I don't find it would be an eyesore, as after all, I'm the one that opted to sort by date added in the first place; I could always revert to default title sort,

or better yet, toggle value display off. Remember this is a quick and dirty mockup that took 5 minutes to do, (with random dates).

To me, no contest this is a million times better than having to enter detail view just to see where I stand.

I take this as a token that (most) people's eyes would not start to bleed by seeing x-tra useful info, you almost missed it 😉

One thing I don't like about this is that it would take up additional space and change the look.

HOWEVER, I could see removing the YEAR and using that for rating or date info.  That way no additional space would be needed and wouldn't mess up the views.

Well yes, of course, it obviously changes the look, same can be said for any other options people use or choose not to, but is also add usefulness (value) in the process.

In my mockup I used already available place from normal view capture, so yes, it looks a little cramped.

I am guessing code could allow for an extra 6 pixels rows.It would be barely noticeable.

Removing release date, that's not how I would prefer, but I guess it is an option.

Would you be able to move my thread to feature request.

The main reason we don't do this is because we allow you to pick the fields you want to display in the view settings dialog, so we'd essentially have to ignore your options in order to accommodate this.

What we could do is drop the individual field control and just make it a yes or no, do you want text underneath the poster or not. The primary use case for the settings was for people who don't want any text at all.

There is an existing FR for this:

I guess this is another one of those cases where not everyone can be pleased. Although both of these threads relate to a quite reasonable request, I, for one, wouldn't want Title to be sacrificed in any scenario (nor Year, for that matter, but something's gotta give), but as seen from mockups, three-row solution wouldn't be the happiest one: it surely ain't visually appealing and creates excess info onscreen, too much text between graphics; however, as @cayars pointed out, maybe a two-row one, in Title/Sort criteria value combo, with global Item text On/Off toggle added, might work.
