TinyBabyOwl 0 Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 I'd like to mimic how Plex handles users. I want have "home users" and "friends" so that when I sign in to my AppleTV it displays the home users, and I can pin protect my profile. I want my home users to see their profiles on the device, but not need to show them to all "friends". Plex allows the "friends" to sign in to their device and only see their profile. Because my server is hosted remotely I cannot set any users to pin access since they're never on the same local network as the server. So it appears I'm stuck setting the device to not remember users, and any time someone wants to get on they have to sign in which is a complete non-starter for most people. Am I missing something here?

So, for your Friends you would tick "Hide...on local network" and they would never be visible to your Home users. Vice-versa for Home users and they would never be seen outside your home network. I have to check to hide remote and local, since my server is hosted remotely all users are remote users. The pin code only works on local networks (the network the server is on) as well. Does not appear to be a way to get Emby to behave like Plex as far as users are concerned. This is unfortunate as Emby seems great, but I can't force every user to sign in every time on my TV or show all users all the time and require no passwords.

Ah, so even your Home users are remote users. In that case - as one of the great advantages of Emby is there is no central auth server, meaning you have your own server, as opposed to your "own" server - all users are tied to it only. You can for example make a VPN to your remote server, and/or specify IP range which will be considered to be a part of your local network in your server Network settings.
Carlo 4561 Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 The Current Beta has another new feature that might be good for you. You can now allow users to show up on the login page AFTER they have logged in once manually. So you can allow all users to show up but only after the initial login. So this way only users who've used the device previously see a login. This way users in your household will have a quick login, Your sister or brother's house can have their family with a quick login etc.
crusher11 1102 Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 They're still need to enter their password though, right?
Carlo 4561 Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 Depends on how you set the client up. You can have it remember your password for quick login if you want.

I have some accounts with viewing restrictions. If I could use a pin code for individual accounts (the admin account) while still allowing the client to remember log ins, this would solve the issue. Or I can disable my account from showing up, but then I have to sign in every time which is a huge annoyance. 12 hours ago, cayars said: The Current Beta has another new feature that might be good for you. Still leaves me with the problem of users with restricted viewing access being able to switch over to my profile. Edited March 4, 2021 by TinyBabyOwl
Carlo 4561 Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 (edited) You can't match what Plex does exactly in this situation with a remote server because Emby isn't going to let you use a PIN code for remote use. Showing a user and only having a 4 digit numeric password just isn't that secure. Edited March 4, 2021 by cayars

Showing a user and only having a 4 digit numeric password just isn't that secure. It doesn't need to be some extremely secure thing. On the Emby app it would be smart to add a pin code that is only stored client side for specific accounts. After signing in I should be able to go to the settings under the current account and say "set pin code on this device". But the beta change helps a bit. I have to sign in to my account every time which isn't too bad, just annoying. But it all works better for my family and friends who have a lot less tolerance for finnicky steps in tech stuff. Carlo 4561 Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 (edited) If it doesn't need to be highly secure have you thought about just using a 4 digit password? Edited March 4, 2021 by cayars 1

Considered it, but it's not super necessary for my account. I can enter text from my phone on AppleTV, so I just auto fill the password anyways. Would just be a nice feature to have on the client. I may just look into creating my own simple client. I'll make a feature request too since I haven't seen a client-side only pin code for specific accounts suggested yet (I'll look more). Loving Emby so far, that one little feature would make it perfect for me!
Carlo 4561 Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 Is this only for your account or your family accounts? If so you could include your IP range as "local" to the server which would then enable you to use PIN Codes. You would however need to manually set your clients bitrates if needed as the server would no longer consider you external (not a big deal). I'm referring to the very first option on the NETWORK menu called LAN NETWORKS.
