LAN Remote connection issue

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I'm trying to connect my laptop to my server which is on a desktop. My tablet and have no problems connecting at all. I've tried the IP for in home and remote access. They're on the same network, and I even shut off the laptops defender firewall briefly with no luck. Any ideas of what else I can try. Thanks for any help!

Hi there. First, I suggest you edit your post and change the topic title to "Local" or "LAN" connection issue, as that might be more indicative of your issue - and consequently inform community in a more targeted way. "Remote" refers to WAN access, outside your network.

Next, could you please describe with a little more detail (like your current setup and IPs) and how did you try to connect?

Thanks, changed! The server is on the desktop computer (version 4.5.4.0). In the dashboard it says my server is up to date and the lan access says IP 192.168.200.2:8096  When I log into the emby site it gives me the option to add a server,. I enter the IP and it says connections failure.

What do you mean by log into the Emby site?

IF I correctly understood your issue, you cannot access your server from a laptop in a same local network. Did you try typing 192.168.200.2:8096 into your laptop browser window? There's no servers to add, you'd already BE in your server. If you're trying to access your server through EmbyConnect (which is unnecessary for local access), you need to setup remote access (depending on your configuration, it might or might not require some additional steps). Did you do that?

Going to 192.168.200.2:8096  in the browser on the laptop just times out.

Let's sort your local access first. Can you or can you not access your server locally?

Have you checked your firewall permissions on your server machine? Is your server allowed to accept incoming connections?

I can access the sever with my tablet and phone using the Emby app.All the inbound Emby entries are green, and so is port 8096.

No sure if it makes a difference, but my laptop has always been able to 'see' the media desktop, but not access any files (like to move or copy them, no permission). Never been able to fix that.

What's your laptop's IP address?

Well, you ain't on the same subnet as the server. Can you go to your server machine and type ipconfig into Command Prompt?

Edit: Do you have multiple NIC in your system?

198.168.200.2 is the desktop running the emby server. I know next to nothing about networking. I've got a router and 2 switches. That's all I know.

We're trying to find out why is your server binding to that address, which is kinda unusual tbh, but step by step. On your server machine, type cmd into Search box; press Enter; type ipconfig; press Enter. Not complicated.

Hi, Sounds like you have two routers or APs using NAT and not just one.

From your notebook open a cmd window and enter this.

tracert 192.168.200.2

copy and paste those results here

The desktop  (emby server) is 192.168.200 . Here is the tracert from the laptop. It just keeps timing out:

  1     1 ms     1 ms    <1 ms  router.asus.com [192.168.1.1]
  2    11 ms    11 ms    12 ms  142.254.146.93
  3   183 ms    22 ms    34 ms  ae62.nwalinco01h.midwest.rr.com [74.128.4.25]
  4    19 ms    17 ms    21 ms  be29.lsvqkydb01r.midwest.rr.com [65.29.27.154]
  5     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  6     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  7     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  8     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  9     *        *        *     Request timed out.
 10     *        *        *     Request timed out.
 11     *        *        *     Request timed out.

Is that a typo or did you type 192.128.200.2 ?

If you did get the 2 in there correctly then you're going out to the internet vs your network.

What equipment do you have in the way or routers, Access Points and switches between the Internet and your Server?

Same question from Internet to your Notebook?

EDIT: do you have a VPN client running anywhere?

Something does not add up but I can assume if you added 192.168.0.0/16 to Dashboard-Networks "LAN networks:", does it work?

It was a typo, I meant 192.168.200.2    No VPN. Asus router and switches. The server machine is hooked to a switch. Not sure what was meant by adding anything in the dashboard.

But how would this client get that IP address?  Your router gateway is 192.168.1.1, so all you clients should be in that same subnet.

Okay, it was jumping from router, to switch, to another switch. I connected it directly to the router and the ip changes to 192.168.1.194 and I can connect from the laptop. But I can't leave it like this.

That is why I said this.  But you can list your networks also.  I am guessing that 192.168.200.x subnet is not considered local.

I  put it back the way it was and it held the 192.168.1.194.8086 ip, so I guess it's fixed.
