Cannot restore from backup

Hi there,

I have a query regarding the server configuration backup/restore utility. I am active Emby Premiere subscriber for reference.

I have recently had to reinstall Windows on my computer. I made sure I had a most recent backup using the server configuration backup utility before I wiped my drive to reinstall Windows (all my content is on removable storage).

Upon re-installing Windows, and then Emby, I have installed the configuration backup/restore utility and when I go to set up a location to store backups (the same place as my previous backups are), I click save and I get a never-ending 'loading' wheel as it thinks about it endlessly.

I have re-installed the plugin multiple times and have restarted my Emby server before/after each time, to no avail.

I'd really like to be able to restore my server configuration before re-adding my content. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Ben

Do you have write permissions for that folder? What happens if you change it, input some other path? Still loading indefinitely?

Hi there,

I have verified read/write permissions yes. I'm currently logged onto the PC as local administrator and have even moved the folder to the C:\ drive (was originally on the removable storage device with all my content on) with the same problem.

Thanks

For test only, could you point it to some 'blank' folder, i.e. one without those previous backups?

I just created C:\backuptest with 'Everyone' > Full Control as a test and it is still loading indefinitely

Do you think I ought to uninstall/reinstall Emby server?

Nah, not yet, although it's a blank server so it wouldn't do any damage, let's try to solve current issue else you might just end up in same situation.

Are you inserting that path manually or clicking the search icon and navigating to it?

I have tried both variants. I have also tried going via the UNC path of the localhost + administrative share (eg: \\localhost\c$\backup)

And is the Emby Server installed under that same PC admin user?

At the moment it's a fresh install of Windows 10- only one user which is me. I installed Emby under that account.

The user is a Microsoft account, not a completely local user, but I wouldn't have thought that should make a difference.

It doesn't, although it just might between local users with various privileges. Since you have one user only, that's out of the question. Silly question, but for how long did you actually let the spinning circle run?

The longest I've probably left it is an hour or so, from memory. I can leave it going from now, but if it can't finish in an hour I suspect that there is something else amiss.

Oh, sure, that's way too long. There's a permission issue somewhere there, we're just not finding it.

I have just re-applied 'Everyone' > Full Control permissions on the root C:\backup which contains my backups and have applied inheritance on all child files/folders and tried again which is still causing the same problem, unfortunately.

Quick test you might do to see whether Emby is actually willing to write to that folder: make a folder Movies inside that same C:\backup, put a single movie in it, create Movie-type Library with that C:\backup\Movies path with Save artwork into media folders and Download images in advance options selected during Library set-up, quick scan, check whether downloaded images are actually there? All of that should take 4-5 minutes in total.

Good idea! I just tried and it was able to successfully pick up a film from inside that folder and has added it to my test library.

Good, but that's still read-only. Are there any images downloaded and placed next to media file?

Sorry- I see what you mean. I refreshed all metadata and images are being downloaded into that folder.

Well, I reckon we can exclude any permission issue in that case, as the folder can obviously be written to, hence likely being either some compatibility issue or something unrelated. Are you running stable or beta server?

I am running the latest stable version per the website. Downloaded yesterday.

And you installed Backup plugin from the Catalogue, not by placing some older version manually into your \programdata\plugins folder?

That's right, I installed the latest version from the plugin catalog.

Silly question again, have you inserted your Premiere key into new server already?

There are no silly questions when it comes to troubleshooting (IT consultant here!). Yes I have installed my Premiere key as I am aware the Backup utility is a premiere feature.
