SPORTS Naming to get correct metadata *please*

Recommended Posts

Hello Emby

I have a folder with my sports collection (NFL superbowl games) which I'd like to make look great with the right data.  I think there is something like "thesportsdb.com" so can someone please advise me of the correct folder naming and "media type"?

I have this media type as "home videos" and it doesnt have the correct metadata.

Many thanks Rob

Hi, yes, thesportsdb is something we'd like to add in future updates. Thanks.

So are you saying there is no way to structure my Sports folder now to get the correct metadata on each of my superbowl games?

There is currently no internet metadata support, but you can certainly name your files to clearly indicate the Superbowl and add a nice image to it.

I've got Boxing, EPL, LALIGA, MLB, NCAAF, NFL, NHL, SERIEA, UEFA, UFC, WWF & Racing sports libraries.

The easy method is to setup a sports library on disc with sub folders for each sport. Then setup your library like this:

Then you can use a folder view as your default and get this:

Then if you click on NFL football you would get all the years. Clicking on 2012 would give:

Clicking on week 1 would give:

I intentionally don't allow emby to generate images because sometimes it would grab a pic with scores showing. :(

So anyway, with clear naming of your files you don't need meta-data.

I'm probably going to reorganize a bit.  For example multiple football (soccer) leagues are shown but I'll be moving that to one master then the individual leagues under it like I've done with Racing.

UFC, Boxing & WWE are similar like this

Soccer, Baseball, Football are all year/week/team vs team

OK thanks guys for all the advice...

Last question - do I set this us as "movies" media type?

Cheers

Shoot I didn't mention that. :)
If you wanted to do something like I showed above I used the "Home Videos & Photos" Library choice.
I then set the default view in each client to use folders.

Each of the "mount points" I showed in the first pic becomes a "folder" in this view.

I use a TV Show library. Each sport is a show, each season is a season, each game is an episode. Specials holds pre-season games, all-star games, etc.

For the NFL, I use a WWGG format - for example, the sixth game played in week four has episode number 0406.

For the NBA, I use a YYMMDDGG format. So the fourth game on January 22, 2019 is episode number 19012204.

This means that no matter which games I have, or when I add them, it all works fine. Just today I'm adding two games from the 2007 Finals. I already had games one and three, I'm adding games two and four. But with my episode format, they'll slot in exactly where I want them to.

I then create custom thumbnails for each episode, and add them as backdrops as well so that image displays in Continue Watching.

That's exactly how I used to do it as well @crusher11

I found over time for ME, the home video method was easier because I don't care about the meta-data or graphic cover.  It doesn't look as nice but makes it much easier to manage which was my main objective.

I didn't/don't like getting sports results back mixed with TV Show content in searches which my way avoids but others may want that, so that's something to consider as well.

As crusher11 and I both show, sports can be handled using Emby, but it's not going to be nearly as easy as Movies or Series (they get your spoiled). :)

You should test a couple of ways to set thing up for your liking with some sample/test data before committing.

The thing I like about it is being able to super easily binge a season, or a playoff series, or whatever. It autoplays the next game, and if I take a break I can pick it up in Continue Watching.

There is now a SportsDb plugin in the Emby plugin catalog. Please see here for more info:
