Michael1952 1 Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Hi Everyone, I have a really dumb question. I have been operating under an assumption that I would be able to access my server over the internet from anywhere. Am I wrong to have assumed this or am I doing something wrong. It seems that when I leave my home, again assuming that I can listen to my music, that whenever the buffer runs out in my phone that the music stops. If I am correct in my assumption that I should be able to listen "anywhere" what am I doing wrong. I have my computer set to not sleep or hibernate so I know that is not the problem. I don't know of any other setting that I might set to make listening away from home possible. Thanks, Michael
Happy2Play 9783 Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Have you followed the steps in the KB (see external section)? Emby Connectivity : Emby If your ISP is using cgNAT then this is another story.
Michael1952 1 Posted February 9, 2021 Author Posted February 9, 2021 Hi Happy@play and thanks for your answer. This, although, has confused me even more after reading the KB article you suggested I checked the setup I have and all is as the the KB described. I don't know what could be the problem and sorry but I don't know what cqNAT is so I couldn't say for sure whether or not my provider is using that or not, I'll have to try again to see if I can make this work. Thanks again Happy2Play, Michael
Happy2Play 9783 Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 @Michael1952 Is your dashboard WAN address the same as what shows on a site like canyouseeme.org? Have you set port forwarding on your router for Emby ports to the IP address of system running Emby?
Michael1952 1 Posted February 9, 2021 Author Posted February 9, 2021 Happy2Play, I checked the IP address on canuseeme and it DOES NOT match what I see on my server dashboard. I use a VPN and checked the IP address it has for my computer and it matches the canuseeme, SOOO..I don't know how to set the IP address for the server (or if that is possible). How do I rectify the situation so I match IP addresses?
Michael1952 1 Posted February 9, 2021 Author Posted February 9, 2021 By The way Happy2Play i did check my port forwarding and i have port 8096 forwarded for EMBY both internal and external.
Michael1952 1 Posted February 9, 2021 Author Posted February 9, 2021 Ok here's what I did... I shut down Emby server and reinstalled server over the top of the previous server install. That reset the server and now the IP addresses match. How can I assure that my IP address is always set to the same address as my VPN? It is not static so will change each time I restart my VPN.
Happy2Play 9783 Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 You would need a VPN that allows port forwarding. Otherwise you would have to set your true WAN address in Network - External domain so you can connect to Emby via that address. But this is a issue when your WAN address changes.
gillmacca01 211 Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 you could set up a DNS as your external IP, then it doesn't matter it your WAN address changes

Any pointers would be appreciated. Sorry it took a couple of days to get back to you. Pressing business.
gillmacca01 211 Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 I don't know what device your client is on, but I signed up for a DNS from https://www.noip.com/. I signed up for the full service, but it is available free (but you would need to update the DNS every 30 days).

Thanks gillmacca01, I figured it out , so i kind of need to slow down and look at things instead of relying on the forums to get easy answers . But I do appreciate the help. I was able to get a dynamic DNS from DYNU Dynamic DNS for free and plugged it into the server and that solved my wandering IP addresses. So good call on your part. Thanks again.
