denywinarto 5 Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 I still dont understand how it works if i want to open the link via WAN. Assuming i have this file on my library Z:\Movies\A\Alien (2004)\Alien (2004).mkv So i put Alien (2004).strm, containing http://ddnsname:8096/Movies/A/Alien (2004)/Alien (2004).mkv ran media scan open it on other pc via WAN connection, but it says unable to find specified file. What am i missing?
Luke 42083 Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Quote open it on other pc via WAN connection Hi, how exactly did you do this?

crusher11 1102 Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 What's your goal? What do you think strm files are for?

crusher11 1102 Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 A strm file gets added to your library just like a video file, and is accessed the same way. It can contain the URL of media that isn't on the server.

Anyways, i just want to share a movie about coronavirus to a family from different city, am i right about using this?
crusher11 1102 Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Why do you need a STRM file to do that? Emby can do that on its own; give them an account on your server.

The only way giving a strm file will work is if it has a proper url. This "http://ddnsname:8096/Movies/A/Alien (2004)/Alien (2004).mkv" will never work, as Emby does not sent a url like that nor would anyone like that. Why not log into Emby and just select play? The people i'm sharing with are elderly people who are not tech-savy and more likely to watch youtube hoaxes, you see. So i need something that is easier to access, preferably click and play. Login to emby and searching for the correct movie might be too complicated for them
Happy2Play 9783 Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 (edited) There might be a way to build the url in Emby's API but this is beyond me. Api link at the bottom of the Dashboard. Edited February 1, 2021 by Happy2Play
rbjtech 5284 Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 (edited) If they are only interested in a few files, then the easiest way to do this is to is to deny everything in 'Parental Settings' for their account - and just Tag the files you want them to see. In the example below - anything with the Tag of '4K' will be able to be seen/played - but obviously you can name it whatever you wish .. Edited February 1, 2021 by rbjtech 1

This is almost ideal but it still needs to login, i suppose there's no way to bypass login?

They/you only need to login once - then whenever they open the client, it auto logs in next time so they can direct play the media from the main screen if they wish.
Carlo 4561 Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 Just to make something clear if not already. STRM files are for the SERVER itself to find the location of files to add to a library. It's just a placehold pointing to the actual location of the media file. STRM files are NOT used by users in any manner directly. 1

So there's absolutely no way to click and play? I'm sharing with 2 dozens of people 18 hours ago, cayars said: Just to make something clear if not already.
