Emby and encoding for HDR10+ / Dolby Vision

Hi all

I want to know the process to encode my UHD movies to retain the HDR or Dolby Vision information for use with Emby.

Will the HDR10+ information be used if I encode using the HDR10+ meta-data using the x265-params argument?

Will the Dolby Vision information be used if I keep the 1080p video track (that I believe is the Dolby Vision layer)? If so, if I was to re-encode the main video to reduce the file size, but kept the Dolby Vision track untouched, would it still be a valid file? Or can these disks be re-encoded to be a single video stream file, or into HDR10+ or something.

Hopefully some of that makes sense to someone who has the required information.

Thanks

Hi, in terms of using the information, yes the apps and devices that support this will use them, for example our Android apps.

You're actually better off to ask this on the doom9 forums, as it is not the Dev team's responsibility to inform people the correct way to encode their files.  Doom9 will let you discuss this as long as you do not discuss piracy, so not talking about downloads or such.  The community there is far more knowledgeable and they will more than likely even be able to give you the proper command lines to use with ffmpeg.

Yes I did consider that. I posted here mostly to find out what information Emby could access, or if there was a preferred way of creating the media files that Emby would have the best chance of using to the fullest.

As long as you have the original files, you can always experiment.  Yes it's time consuming as heck, but DolbyVision for home media use is literally months old, so everything is still in its infancy.  There was actually a great post on the Doom9 forums similar to what you asked, as apparently Handbrake now has a 10bit encode pipeline.
