Is there a way to order channels via sort order?

I'm certain that previously I would go through my channels and use the metadata field to have my guide show the channels according to the sort order.

That no longer seems to work? 

Is there a recommended way to do this now, without resorting to third party software?

This is for satellite channels and those that come by m3u files.

Currently I add a heart to each channel and that helps, but I would hope this basic functionality could be reintroduced as soon as possible.

If not, will it be included in the much anticipated update?
