Looks like that is the only way to perform a backup in Windows 8.

That is the only way using Microsoft's built-in tool. You can buy the best tool for scheduled backups, Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/ but I personally don't think it's cheap. A company called Easeus has a free version with some limitations and adverts. http://www.easeus.com/backup-software/tb-free.html. If you're hard core you can also use a free open-source tool called Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.org/

In the market, many companies provide backup Solution. You can check this CloudBacko Backup Software. Its unlimited and easy to use. I already use it now for some months and am shocked by the features of this backup. Must give it a try , its really help you. Thanks
