Michael1952 1 Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 I checked and find no threads pertaining permissions in Ubuntu. Could someone give me the rundown on changing he permission for /michael folder and the /Music folder? I am assuming that they should be set to root.
Michael1952 1 Posted January 19, 2021 Author Posted January 19, 2021 I tried to change the ownership of MEDIA but I got this ...is my syntax wrong?
Michael1952 1 Posted January 19, 2021 Author Posted January 19, 2021 I read the guide and tried to apply the syntax as indicated still no luck. michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Films$ sudo chown emby:user MEDIA [sudo] password for michael: chown: invalid group: ‘emby:user’ michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Films$ sudo chown emby:michael MEDIA chown: changing ownership of 'MEDIA': Operation not permitted michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Films$ Am I still doing something wrong?
Michael1952 1 Posted January 19, 2021 Author Posted January 19, 2021 Sorry I forgot to say thank you Luke. I had this problem previously and someone corrected my permissions on Team Viewer l didn't catch everything that was done so now I don't know how to fix it I would like to learn how to do it on my own but have hit a wall and can't get over it. Thanks again for any help you might be able to give me.
mark-in-dallas 87 Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Michael, I'm the guy that helped you on team viewer. Any directories you change ownership or set permissions to root for will not be accessible to emby. What we did was set those directories to michael michael, then we added the emby user to the michael group and the michael user to the emby group, which gives emby access to anything created by you, and you the ability to delete files or recordings created by emby.
Michael1952 1 Posted January 19, 2021 Author Posted January 19, 2021 HI Mark sorry i had a cal i had to take but i am back now. OK, reading what you wrote i get the idea of giving Michael and Emby both the permission access the files but i just can't figure out how to do that. I keep getting "operation is not permitted".
Michael1952 1 Posted January 19, 2021 Author Posted January 19, 2021 Here is an example of what i am getting : michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Films$ sudo ls -l [sudo] password for michael: total 1536 drwxr-xr-x 2 michael michael 524288 Jan 17 19:04 '$RECYCLE.BIN' drwxr-xr-x 5 michael michael 524288 Jan 17 12:36 MEDIA drwxr-xr-x 3 michael michael 524288 Jan 17 12:21 'System Volume Information' michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Films$ sudo chown emby:michael chown: missing operand after ‘emby:michael’ Try 'chown --help' for more information. michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Films$ sudo chown emby:michael MEDIA chown: changing ownership of 'MEDIA': Operation not permitted michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Films$ Where am I going wrong?
mark-in-dallas 87 Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 (edited) I did not go back and look at your initial screenshot before, but at least part of the problem is that the michael directory itself is assigned to root root which means that emby cannot access it or any directories or files inside of it. It also has ACL permissions set so I suggest running this command: sudo chown -R michael:michael michael After that run ls -l again and make sure the + at the end of the permissions is gone. If it isn't then run this command: setfacl -bn michael Then try to add a library again, or whatever it is you were trying to do. Edited January 20, 2021 by mark-in-dallas
Michael1952 1 Posted January 22, 2021 Author Posted January 22, 2021 (edited) Hi Mark i used the commands you suggested and it it did remove the + from the permissions. Now i can add the folders in the library but when i go back to the library page in emby there is no library added. I don't understand after adding this "/media/michael/Music/MEDIA" to the music category under library i get no library added. Edited January 22, 2021 by Michael1952
Michael1952 1 Posted January 22, 2021 Author Posted January 22, 2021 (edited) Hi Mark, Let me see if i can make this clearer than I have so far. first I have two disks one: michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Music/MEDIA$ ls -l total 15296 drwxr-xr-x 6 michael michael 65536 Jan 16 16:39 '$RECYCLE.BIN' drwxr-xr-x 4 michael michael 65536 Dec 22 07:39 '38 Special - Anthology 2001 [FLAC] [h33t] - Kitlope' drwxr-xr-x 5 michael michael 65536 Dec 22 05:39 'AC DC - Discography [2156] PL' drwxr-xr-x 4 michael michael 65536 Dec 22 05:34 'AC-DC - The Best Songs (2016) [MP3~320Kbps]~[Hunter] [FRG]' drwxr-xr-x 3 michael michael 65536 Dec 22 08:45 'Adam And The Ants - Ant Box' drwxr-xr-x 32 michael michael 65536 Dec 22 06:51 'Alice Cooper Discography' drwxr-xr-x 2 michael michael 65536 Dec 21 08:47 'All Them Witches - Lightning at the Door a2k' drwxr-xr-x 2 michael michael 65536 Dec 26 09:41 'Another.Round.2020.1080p.WEB-DL.X264.AC3-EVO[TGx]' drwxr-xr-x 7 michael michael 65536 Dec 21 04:05 'Aretha Franklin - Original Album Series[5CDs][www.lokotorrents.com][mp3]' drwxr-xr-x 4 michael michael 65536 Dec 21 09:45 'ARETHA FRANKLIN - The Very Best of - Vol 1 & 2 - Remastered - 320Kbps - Drbn 154' drwxr-xr-x 2 michael michael 65536 Dec 22 05:40 'Ava Max - Blood, Sweat and Tears (2018) (Mp3 - 320kbps) [WR Music]'...... the other on a separate disk: michael@michael-desktop:/media/michael/Films/MEDIA/Films$ ls -l total 70656 drwxr-xr-x 3 michael michael 524288 Jan 16 12:05 '12 Monkeys' drwxr-xr-x 3 michael michael 524288 Jan 16 12:59 '1917 (2019) [1080p] [BluRay] [5.1] drwxr-xr-x 3 michael michael 524288 Jan 16 13:55 2010 drwxr-xr-x 2 michael michael 524288 Jan 13 22:12 '24 Frames Sonata Premiere' drwxr-xr-x 3 michael michael 524288 Jan 16 12:56 '7 Guardians Of The Tomb 2018 Movies 720p ... When I go to the add library page in emby to add the path to each library such as MOVIES I get no library added when i go back to the add library page where i should see the library scanning file. Theres no library there. Edited January 22, 2021 by Michael1952
mark-in-dallas 87 Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 (edited) Well if the directories are being added to the library, I can only think of 2 reasons that the contents may not be showing up. 1. The library scan has not completed. 2. The correct content type wasn't selected when creating the library. I don't know if that would affect content being shown, but in my thought process might be a possibility. If you want to do another Team Viewer session we can, just let me know. Michael1952 1 Posted January 23, 2021 Author Posted January 23, 2021 Hi Mark, Man I really hate to bother you again. I have double checked and made sure that i am not doing something wrong. It's not scanning at all. It may be something i did setting the permissions, I don't know. You have been really helpful and gone out of your way and I appreciate it. If you are willing we can do it, but tomorrow would be better for me. but you tell me when is a good time for you.
mark-in-dallas 87 Posted January 23, 2021 Posted January 23, 2021 Yes, we can do it today. I will be around most of the day, except to make a quick run to the supermarket, so pretty much anytime works for me.
Michael1952 1 Posted January 23, 2021 Author Posted January 23, 2021 Never mind Mark. I got it. All I had to do is give emby group possession of the michael folder and they loaded right up. I Sure do appreciate your help tho. It gave me the knowledge to do it myself. Thanks and enjoy your Saturday.
mark-in-dallas 87 Posted January 23, 2021 Posted January 23, 2021 You didn't even need to do that, if it was the ownership of the folder that you actually changed. All you needed to do was give emby access to the folder by adding the emby user to the michael group, which I'm sure that we did before, with this command: sudo usermod -a -G michael emby.
Michael1952 1 Posted January 23, 2021 Author Posted January 23, 2021 (edited) Thanks Mark, I don't know things are working right now so I guess I did something right. I tried the command you just gave me and came back with "user emby does not exist" any thoughts as to why it did that? also I am trying to change the permissions for a new directory folder using " sudo chmod +rwx DVRRecordings" and it looks like the command executes but nothing changes in the permissions. the new directory folder requires write permission and right now it is "r-x". mark-in-dallas 87 Posted January 23, 2021 Posted January 23, 2021 (edited) Type: groups into a terminal. that should display all groups and I'm sure that emby will be listed. The command you are using to add write permissions should work if the directory name and capitalization are correct. I can't say why it isn't. But, an easy way to change directory permissions is to open your File Explorer and navigate to then right click on the directory you wish to modify, then select Properties, then Permissions, and you can change them there. If the directory is assigned to root and you don't have permission to make changes then close the window and right click in the empty space in File Explorer and select Open as Root, then select the directory again and click on Properties again and you'll have full access. I know that you're wanting to become more familiar with Linux and using the terminal, but much of what you'll want or need to do can be accomplished within GUI apps Edited January 23, 2021 by mark-in-dallas
Michael1952 1 Posted January 23, 2021 Author Posted January 23, 2021 Hmmmm... yeah it wouldn''t let me change the permissions in file explorer so I tried to "open as root" and that isn't an option sooo...i don't know where to go from here. I will search around some more and see what i can find but your right that is a much easier way to change permissions.
Michael1952 1 Posted January 23, 2021 Author Posted January 23, 2021 Just checked my library scan...Its complete YAY. It all looks good. Thanks for your help Mark. I did some searching about for a way to get to root in the File Explorer. I came across an "Open-as-Administrator " add-on to Nautilus (File Explorer) and I added it and it did give me an option to open the folder with admin privileges but I still cant change the permissions. Don't know why that is yet but still looking.
