Default to folders in Home videos & photos collection type

Hi!

Can it be that since one of the last updates (I have version 4.5.4.0) I cant make the "folders" view the default for "Home videos & photos" collections?

If so - how to get that back?

For now its always going back to videos and I have to select "folders" manually.

Same thing for enabling "Title" in "Show fields" - its switched off everywhere now!

Speaking of that problems: I still would love a plain folder view collection - without any fancy "intelligence" that won't work anyways....

Just display the folders and files available and the content of the files if its a known filetype, download for every other filetype...

regards

Lukas

Same problem here using the beta version 4.6.0.10 on a Xubuntu 20.04 Linux host.

The "Home Videos & Photos" section of my server always opens showing every video as a separate item, not showing folders, meaning I have about 1300 videos listed with no simple visual way to quickly recognise the separate items from their thumbnail.

I'm not sure when the change occurred but it used to always open in Folder view, which I can easily get to from the five views shown at the top of the dashboard, but why the change?

Regards. Andrew

@grl - just arriving at Emby... Can you share how you could make the folder view default for photos? I didnt find the setting - and I also came around the issue of the view defaulting to videos... I would like to make folders the default view for all photo subfolders as well... Thanks!

As you can read above this is NOT possible at the moment.

Luke promised a fix in the next version but that has not been released so far - so I'd suggest to wait a few days and check for updates then (can easily be done in the dashboard of your server, it will show you if there's a new version available.)

At the moment it seems that you can't do that.

See post #3 above by Luke telling us it will be possible in the next release, though he does not say when that will be.

Just wait and we should see it become possible again.

Too slow; I see this is already answered by grl.

Whohoo!!

I upgraded a few minutes ago to the new beta version 4.6.0.22 and folder sorting of the major sectors of Home is back again.

Thanks so much to the developers for giving us this ability once again.  As I tend to sort all my media files in my own folder hierarchy in the file system rather than leaving it to applications to sort them, this makes my life so much better and easier

Thanks for the feedback.

Any tips how to change the defaults then? I have a photos library that keeps displaying on videos when I open it.

Also my "Photos" page can only be sorted by video filters, like critic rating and playcount etc etc. The whole setup seems fairly horrible for simply trying to display photos by date added.

Ajgreeny mentioned it was working on beta version 4.6.0.22, what version are you running ?

On my beta version you go to Settings ->Home Screen and scroll to the bottom where you can set the default sort view for library display.

It's working well in this beta version, 4.6.0.22 but I have no idea if the standard version is working in the same way as I haven't used that for a very long time.  You could always try out the beta version which I've been using now for many months, maybe years, with no problems on my Xubuntu 20.04 host.

I'm not even sure what the differences are between the standard and beta versions but the beta is definitely worth a try in my opinion.

Has this been resolved?

I am on 4.6.4.0 and my photos and home videos libraries all default to videos.

If i have to make a setting where is this setting hidden? (Should really be under the library you are editing if it is indeed a setting)

Or maybe it is not fixed yet in 4.6.4.0?

Hi there, have you explored your emby user home screen options?

I had missed these, but looking closer at this it seems setting the default view doesn't speed up emby at all, infact the query remains the same and just as slow as with any other default view i can select. It seems it has the same query for all views which is terrbile for large shares. Why exactly is the query looking for both pictures and videos and then sorting them when default view is set to folders instead of just opening the share and displaying the folders?

Compared from old emby opening the same share took 20ms to open, now it takes nearly 60 000ms (almost 1 minute!)

Line 24895: 2021-08-14 23:04:43.803 Info Server: http/1.1 Response 200 to 1.1.1.4. Time: 56427ms. http://media:8096/emby/Users/ca2edc0b5e604b658a75fcbcc71c93a3/Items/8659da281dbb01d5a371ffa1a700bc9a?X-Emby-Client=Emby Web&X-Emby-Device-Name=Firefox&X-Emby-Device-Id=13817025-6be7-425d-b6f0-56f9be528ce3&X-Emby-Client-Version=4.6.4.0

Also having the user control these things is bad , because each user /device seem to have their own share settings, there should be a way in the library configuration panel to set the default view per each share that overwrites whatever the user sets for themselves. That + the query must be different depending on which view you select, otherwise there's no real reason to have different views to begin with because emby is just terrbile and slow with any share that has many files.

Please fix it!
