Emby doesn't read metadata if file name is too long

TLDR(To Long, Dope-ass Rhyme)

Subtitles gone? Maybe your filenames too long!

This might not be a bug specific to Emby but its probably worth mentioning for people searching for similar problems.

Setup:

Emby Server installed on Windows 10.

Bug replicated on Emby Theater and web browser on another PC also running Windows 10.

Problem:

Emby does not show the options for embedded subs on a file, or the Codec breakdown at the bottom of the file entry.

Troubleshooting:

I noticed this on Anime probably because of my necessity for embedded subs and the comically long names that some Anime shows have.

I have Sonarr automatically renaming files as they're added with the format "{Series Title} - S{season:00}E{episode:00} - {Episode Title} - {Quality Full}"

This gives the most recent problem file the name "Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town! - S01E02 - Suppose the Feeling of Being Out of Place Like the... - WEBRip-1080p.mkv"

Quite the mouthful!

Workaround:

Delete all the crap from the filename.

I renamed the file "Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town! - S01E02 - WEBRip-1080p.mkv" and after a re-scan Emby picked up all the details perfectly.

So I'm wondering, is there another solution for this?

The current Sonarr naming format and Emby setup works perfectly for 99% of files so if its a choice between messing that up or manually renaming the odd file, I'll stick with how I'm doing it but I'm just wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem?

How you handled this is likely the best way.  Having such a long TV series title is a killer.

You can also add the year to the series folder name such as

The Big Bang Theory (2007)

Under this you would have your seasons such as

Season 1

Under the season the episode.  You don't need to repeat the show name or season name and don't need extra info nor even the description but can use something as simple as:

S01E01.mp4

Technically you don't even need the Season folder but I think most will like it. So

The Big Bang Theory (2007)\Season 1\S01E01.mp4    or

The Big Bang Theory (2007)\S01E01.mp4

So for series that are very long you can get by with these shorter methods and Emby should still be able to function quite well.
