Radio stations, strm files and tracks 'now playing'

Hi,

I've just discovered strm files for adding radio stations to emby. Works fine (when I can hunt down the radio station streaming link!). Anyhow, I understand that strm files just contain a link to the stream, so this isn't particularly a strm question. However, most streaming radio stations show a 'now playing' field in whatever player they use. Is there anyway of getting that to show in emby? I'm expecting the answer to be no, but just thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

Hi, can you go over an example of how you have your strm files setup?  What type of library?

What client are you using to play these?

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

Not sure what you mean by client but I'm running emby server on a windows 10 laptop with the files saved on an external hard drive. I'm then using the emby Firestick app on my TV.

I have a Radio library as type 'music'. The file structure is (for example):

E:/

     Media/

        Radio/

           Guerrilla Radio/

                     Guerrilla Radio.strm

The strm file has one line of text (in this case): https://s2.stationplaylist.com:9460/guerrilla

OK good so far. Can you provide a picture of what this looks like on the Firestick when playing back a radio station like this?

Hi,

Yes, picture attached. I uploaded the backdrop picture.

So the screen is showing:

Current time, Time played so far and the name of the station. Not sure what 1/1 signifies.

Hope that helps.

Thanks

OK so what is missing from this view?  You're not going to see anything to do with the current show or song being played as there is no way for Emby to know this at all.

1 | 1 is saying this is 1 of 1 items.  Take a look at this same thing in a movie library and it will likely make more sense.  If you have 500 movies and your selector is on movie 10 it will be 10 | 500.  Quick easy way to see how many items you have in that library and your current position.

OK, thanks for confirming. Thanks for your help.

BTW, meant to ask you previously but have you checked out the Emby TuneIn plugin in the catalog?

I can’t see this in the plug-in catalog at all - it’s definitely there? I have looked, and looked again.

I can see it - I had to scroll right, and it was in the "Channels" section (and the "Top Plugins" section).

Nifty trick from I think it was Happy2Play.

In Settings Menu in the Web admin add this to the Custom CSS box

/*Change plugin catalog to vertical listing*/
#pluginTiles div.emby-scrollbuttons-scrollSlider{ flex-wrap: wrap;}

Now all plugins will be in a grid and no more horizontal scrolling!
For me it's much easier to find things this way in the catalog.

So, could this trick be used to display other pages in a grid? For example albums or tracks for individual music artists? To be frank, I haven't a clue about custom CSS!

The strm file has one line of text (in this case): https://s2.stationplaylist.com:9460/guerrilla

You can use ffprobe to get the artist/title/info:

ffprobe -v quiet -print_format json -show_format -show_streams "https://s2.stationplaylist.com:9460/guerrilla" > Guerrilla-Radio.json

We need emby to run this part.

Hi, we do, just not until the first time you play for strm.

I'm not sure what you mean. I have lots of radio stations that I can get the info with this method but no song info shows in emby. Emby just needs to read the url in the strm and then pass that to a variable and use in ffprobe to display the song title and artist.

Hi, yes and we do probe it the first time you play it.

Well I see no song title or artist displayed

Gotta run out right now but will be back. But for now you can use the example I gave and make a json file from the URL https://s2.stationplaylist.com:9460/guerrilla.

Look in the created json file and you see the title and artist - but playing the strm shows no info.

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

An example of what? There is no playback issue unless you're telling me radio streams from a URL in a .strm file is supposed to show song metadata such as artist, title etc. -- I'm showing a possible way to make it happen.

Information? Like how to report a playback issue? Create a topic and explain the problem? get errors and show logs?
