test399 0 Posted January 10, 2021 Posted January 10, 2021 (edited) I'm watching a show, 48 Hours to be specific, on my shield tv, and started watching it "play from beginning" 10 minutes after it started recording, and fast forwarded through the first set of commercials. Just for testing, I wanted to see if it was possible to do this simultaneously on two different tv's (clients). As if my wife stayed downstairs, and I went upstairs to watch the same program, but start at a different time in the show. So I tried this on another client, while it was still playing on the shield TV, and it didn't give me the choice to "play from beginning" or rewind or fast forward. My question is: Is this how emby is supposed to behave or is there something I should change in my settings to allow this? Can 1 show be played at different times (while separately being rewound/fast forward) , from 2 different clients, while it's being recorded? And- does emby always transcode (in my case ffmpeg-mpeg2 to h264) hdhomerun streams when playing back live tv while recording? I have Hdhomerun set to transcode, yet i have hardware transcoding set to off/no in settings. Does Hdhomerun still transcode when transcoding is set to no/off? -I know it's asking a lot, but I just want to be clarify. Win 10 latest, Ryzen 3700x, 16gb ram, nvme ssd, emby premiere, hdhomerun mpeg2. ts files, gtx 1050 with hardware acceleration turned OFF. Using cpu only for transcoding. I could provide a log, but this is a pretty general question... Edited January 10, 2021 by test399
ebr 16187 Posted January 10, 2021 Posted January 10, 2021 Hi. What was the second app you tried to play from and exactly how did you try to play it?

No Emby won't always transcode but it depends on your settings, the client and if you're watching something that's currently being recorded. It's a bit complex. Only a few types of HDHomeRuns support hardware transcoding on the device itself so if you device doesn't support it that option is ignored. What HDHomeRun do you have? Why aren't you using your GTX 1050 for transcoding? Edited January 10, 2021 by cayars
rbjtech 5284 Posted January 11, 2021 Posted January 11, 2021 The fact the stream is MPEG2 suggests the HD Homerun is not transcoding itself - it will be recording an MPEG2 transport stream. The majority of clients will need to transcode this to play back - there is however no reason why you should not be able to have multiple transcode streams running - your cpu is more than up to the task. 1
