What happens with a video that has an unusual definition ( let's say 600p) ?

I'm trying to understand what will happen when I try to playback a video in 600p for example.

The quality menu only offers 480p or 720p so the video will always be transcoded for playback ?

So is there an interest to have a 600p video instead of a 480p if that will always be transcoded to 480p ?

No transcoding will take place because of the resolution.  The keys to transcoding are are twofold: (1) whether the client can direct play the video as it is (depending on codecs, container, and subtitles), and (2) whether the video's data rate is within the margin specified by the various quality limits that can be specified.

I've made 2 tests, a video encoded un 600p x265 not supported by chrome, when playing on chrome, the video was transcoded to 480p. It was not possible to select 600p or 720p in the definition options of the player.L So in this case encoding in 600p is useless, better encoding in 480p to save some place.

With another 600p video encoded with x264, the video was directly served, si I guess in this case I get a batter quality than a 480p.

Hi there, did you explore the stats feature in the video player to learn why it was transcoding? It was probably transcoding for some other reason not related to the resolution.
