Photos Tags - Where are they stored?

I have a large photo collection.
Each photo is tagged with "keywords"
These Keywords are stored in the IPTC and EXIF metadata of the photo.

I recently imported my library to emby, and it works great.  Emby recognises my keywords without issue and displays them as "tags".

But if I use emby to add new "tags" where will they be stored?? Will They be put into the IPTC or EXIF metadata of the photo? Is there any way I can make this happen?
If this can't happen, where will the keywords be stored?

I don't mind if the new keywords are not stored in the IPTC or EXIF data of the photo, but I would prefer them to be stored in the same folder as the photo so that when I move my photos I can just move the metadata file at the same time and prevent any issues.

Hello Jeremy222,

Please wait for someone from staff support or our members to reply to you.

It's recommended to provide more info, as it explain in this thread:

Thank you.

they will be stored in the library.db file as currently nfo files are not created for photos to be saved next to the media

so should you have to rebuild the db from scratch they would be lost

so for now i would edit the photos and add in the metadata directly so you dont lose it at a later date

Thank-you for your help.

It also means that if I ever want to use software other than embi my keywords will be lost, right?

I think it would be great it embi could write this data to the EXIF or IPTC metadata, do you think I could submit it as a feature request?

it would be better to do one for photo.nfo's - check first if one exists

emby is very limited for metadata editing - i.e. one at a time - so external programs would be much better anyway

If you have a some good photo files for testing that contain a range of iptc/exif/xmp metadata, then please zip them up and attach them here and I'll make sure Emby Server supports reading all of the embedded information.

Thanks !

Hello. Thanks for the continuously improving media self-server tool. I'm playing with Emby as a home movie and photo server EXCLUSIVELY (no commercial metadata scrapping necessary or desired). I have only recently learned about the <set><name>COLLECTIONS</name><set> xml nfo code that Emby can READ for video files. I have already learned about XMP Title - Emby reads as Title, EXIF Description - Emby read as Overview, XMP Subject - Emby reads as Tag, and XMP FileCreateDate - Emby has the option to read as Date added. QUESTION 1: Is there an Emby reference of all the other metadata for jpg, png, jpeg, etc. file type that Emby will read? Specifically, is there an image file metadata that Emby will read for Emby's COLLECTIONS? QUESTION 2: If not, have you considered adding one and calling it COLLECTIONS, for example? While the searchable TAGS and TITLES are great for gathering VIDEO+PHOTO together on a searchable, filtered topic, there are times when a COLLECTION that might span many FOLDERS (media organized into YEARS) and have all sorts of content-specific TAGS would be useful to gather up VIDEO+PHOTO into a comprehensive ALBUM with just the click of a button, with a nice cover, that might be sharable to family based upon the content.
