JoshKidding 0 Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 (edited) SITUATION: I have Emby Server 4.5.4 on my Ubuntu 18.04 home server but can't get ANYTHING to connect to it. I've been all over the forums and unable to find a fix. Everything is wired, no wireless connection attempts. I'm running DDWRT in router. I've tried to connect through: LG WebOS TV app, Android app, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browsers on a non-server Linux machine, and Chrome and Firefox browsers on a WIndows 10 machine. -Neither app detects the server. If I manually add by IP address, message says "cant connect to selected server right now, ensure it is turned on and running" RESOLUTION ATTEMPTS: - I've followed steps at https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Connectivity, no change - Enabled/allowed the 8096 and 8920 ports with "ufw allow..." and "firewall-cmd --add..." commands - disabled firewalls (firewalld and ufw) - set server IP static in router - established port forwarding in router for 8096 and 8920 I'm not sure where else to go from here. Verified server is running with systemctl status emby-server netstat shows 8096 listening. Thanks in advance! Edited December 21, 2020 by JoshKidding
Luke 42077 Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 Quote -All attempted browser connections either freeze at an Emby Splash screen (black screen with emby logo in the center), or a white screen that says "ipaddress" in the top left corner. Hi, what address is in the browser address bar?
JoshKidding 0 Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 (edited) I've tried http://<local server ip>:8096 Or, exactly what appears on my server dashboard. Which now seems obviously not correct since that is how I access the server. So, that silly oversight resolves the "splash screen" issue. Connecting through browser the right way, however, still gives me the "cant connect to selected server right now, ensure it is turned on and running" Edited December 21, 2020 by JoshKidding
Luke 42077 Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 Actually that should work just fine which means that in all likelihood, you have something on the server machine blocking the traffic. Perhaps a software firewall?
JoshKidding 0 Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 I'm not sure where else to check. I have ufw and firewalld both inactive. Even deactivated the SPI firewall in ddwrt. I'll try a quick reboot to see where that gets me. I've seen some posts about ports 1900 and 1901. Possible that this has anything to do with it?
Luke 42077 Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 Quote I've seen some posts about ports 1900 and 1901 That's for the dlna feature. For Emby apps, the default 8096 is the important one, and 8920 if you'll be using SSL.
JoshKidding 0 Posted December 22, 2020 Author Posted December 22, 2020 Okay, I'm still not getting anything after restarting everything.
rylando 0 Posted December 24, 2020 Posted December 24, 2020 I don't know if this will be helpful, but I just moved to Emby this morning, from Plex. After installing the server, I went through the initial setup, choosing language and whatnot. On one of the screens, it asked if I wanted to allow remote connections. I assumed this meant outside of my network, so I unchecked it. After that, nothing. Digging around and trying things, I did a reinstall and left that box checked and it worked. I found additional settings inside for actual outside network access. I suppose Luke or someone else, that isn't posting here for the first time, can chime in to confirm/deny this.
Luke 42077 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 @JoshKidding are you still running into this?
JoshKidding 0 Posted January 6, 2021 Author Posted January 6, 2021 Yes, i was never able to resolve this. Eventually gave up on Emby and have move to an alternative media server. Probably need to close this out.

I'd personally like to try and help you resolve any connectivity issues you have and maybe make any recommendations after seeing your system. I'm pretty good at figuring out why clients can't connect to your server so if you're willing to allow us to try and help you I think you would be much happier long term with Emby. At least you'll know we're willing to go the extra step with remote support! Is this something you're willing to try?
JoshKidding 0 Posted January 6, 2021 Author Posted January 6, 2021 I definitely appreciate the response and support. I would be interested in circling back to it at some point, but with holiday ending I genuinely dont have the availability to do so now. I may take another shot at it after the spring semester.
Carlo 4561 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 We are here to help you if we can. If you can make 15 minutes available, that is good enough to atleast get one session in and see if we can identify anything. I don't know what time zone you are in but I work round the clock on different days to accommodate people's different time zones so we can accomodate you on your time even if it's 3 or 4 am our time. We will do what we can to accomodate you and get you help.
