I'm new to Emby and it looks awesome. What's the best way to stream OTA TV channels to our home in the mountains? Is HDHomeRun + Emby a good choice?

TIA.

Hi, a bit more info please.

Is this a 2nd or vacation home apart from your normal home?
Is the idea to setup Live TV at your home but then stream that from home to to the mountain house?

Or did you want to setup a separate system at the mountain house?
Do you have anything setup in Emby for Live TV at present?

Second home is away from primary location which has great access to OTA channels. Idea is to be able to stream live (or recorded) OTA channels to second home. Emby not yet setup for Live TV at present.

OK thanks for that.  There are multiple ways to do this but here is what I personally would do (what I actually do).

I would pickup an HDHomeRun Quatro 4 port tuner.  You will need an antenna of some kind depending on your proximity to towers near your home if you don't have this already.  Besides the antenna and Quatro you'll need long enough cable to run from the antenna to the tuner.  Since this is a network tuner with Ethernet the device can be moved near the antenna if you have or run Ethernet to it.  If you live in a metro area you can likely get by with a $10 to $15 antenna mounted on the wall inside your home.

My daughter lives in Phila and uses a $10 antenna I gave her mounted behind the TV in an apartment building and get's great reception.  I live 45 miles from the tower and use an outdoor antenna mounted on my tower for OTA.

An alternative if you have Cable TV is to pickup a tuner that can use a cable card.  I use a couple of 3 tuner HDHomeRun Primes for cable.

So you setup Emby Server with a Premiere License. Install and setup an HDHomeRun device and antenna if needed.  With some minor setup you now have a Live TV section with a really nice EPG (electronic program guide) for your use ANWHERE Emby works for you.

If you setup Emby for remote use and have at least a 10 Mbps upload rate on your home network you can stream these TV channels or any other media on your Emby Server to any device on the Internet. You can get by with slower Internet upload rate but I think 8 to 10 is really the minimum you want for a good picture.

Now at your mountain home you'll need Internet access and probably at least a 10 Mbit connect.  You can then use a smart TV or what I'd recommend a MiBox-S which is roughly $60 and is a great little device. If you have WIFI at your mountain home then you can watch your Emby Library or Live TV on any tablet, notebook, cell phone or other device as well as the MBox-S and this would be at either home.

The nice thing about OTA TV is that it's really just a one time upfront charge for the tuner & antenna and then you have no ongoing monthly bills directly related to TV.

Let me know if I covered everything or if you have questions and want me to elaborate on anything,

Carlo

Thanks, Carlo. Can I use AppleTV to stream at the mountain home? Of course, I probably need an Apple app to connect to Emby.

Normally like to get up there once a month. Less these days with Covid.

I've never personally used Apple TV as I don't think I own any Apple products these days minus a couple old iPhones.

But for Emby I'd go Android TV if I didn't have a box already as it has the best app available IMHO for Emby.
