Emby didn't detect no disk space condition for transcode

I was playing an MP4 video (1080p/29fps, 6ch AAC) on my beloved (cough, cough) Roku, having to FF thru the commercials.  It was playing fine until about 3/4 of the way thru then the video stopped playing and went into retrieve mode.  I couldn't recover it (pause, play, FF, etc) and retrieve status was stuck at 50%.  I backed out to the movie page, play, same thing (wouldn't play).  I backed out of the app, went back in, and it wouldn't play.  Server was not busy, I couldn't tell where the problem was.

So, I switched to the Plex app and it said no disk space available to convert the file!  What?!  I looked on the server and saw that the 2GB partition where the Emby transcode temp folder is was full!  R:\Emby\transcoding-temp had 2GB of the video's .TS files in it!

So, two problems:

  1. Emby was not trashing the older (like seconds old) transcode chunks, so the disk filled up.
  2. Emby didn't detect that the disk was full and tell the user, who could not view anything, that there was a problem.

Let me know what logs would be helpful.

Emby does not clean up transcode chunks as it goes.  It maintains the entire transcode until the item is properly stopped.  The Roku itself is defective in a way that if a item is not properly backed out of (stopped) the transcode session is not cleaned up.  There are lots of topics on the issue with Roku's.  You  need enough drive space for the size of the file being transcoded.  Or as many transcode sessions you have going.

Plex does things differently when it comes to transcoding.

But a alert would be nice.  There is a Disk Space plugin in the catalog that may help.

Hi, this is something we'll be looking at improving in future updates. Thanks for the feedback.
