Umm, how do you save metadata to media folders?

I know, I feel dumb even having to ask!

But what is the correct way? Where is this fabled option, exactly? And do I need to have the NFO metadata plugin installed, or does Emby handle this on its own?

I went to my libraries and checked the NFO option under "Metadata savers." But is that the correct way, or am I just creating a backup?

Bonus question: if I add a new movie that comes with an .nfo file (containing ASCII art and human-readable text instead of, well, metadata) to the library, how does Emby handle it?

It is a per library option on the library config.  Yes you need the plugin to write files.

NFO files can be considered a backup, once they are read into the database they are not used, but changes to them will update the database also.  But from a new install standpoint Emby will not have to go to the internet again to get that information again.

Emby will not use this at all but depending on how it is named it could get overwritten.
