What is "NVDEC.Ex"?

"NVDEC.Ex GeForce GTX 1050 - H.265 (HEVC)"

This option JUST popped up on my Transcoding config screen, and was "unchecked".

I know it wasnt there yesterday cause I was reviewing the Transcoding options.   The only thing I did since yesterday was apply the Windows November patch.  (the optional only, i forget what it is called)

@JeremyG - Wait for the next beta. Then it will be gone and you'll see a "HEVC CUVID" entry. Bottom line is that CUVID is the old one and NVDEC.Ex is the new one. We have switched the defaults for the next beta and you should just stick to the defaults (CUVID not selected).

Things will change in the next beta as explained above. Let's wait for this change to happen, then I'll happily explain the end result.
Whatever I would respond now would just be confusing for subsequent readers..

Beta? Just loaded 4.5.3.0 on ubuntu and it shows, not Beta. So, I also am wondering. Are you saying don't use it just yet?

You are correct, we have added it to the latest point release as well.

It is disabled by default because we haven't completed testing in the beta channel yet.

For the release version, we recommend to use it only when you're encountering problems with Nvidia HEVC 10bit decoding (typical symptom is green visual artifacts).

Yay finally i can hw decode HDR content. Thank you very much!

Now adding HDR tonemapping would be the cherry on top. 🤩

I've always had option to decode H265 using NVDEC in Emby with my RTX 2060, how was any new capability added? Other cards maybe?

It's an alternative technique for Nvidia that was added, which may help some who were experiencing problems. If you're not, then there's nothing you need to do.
