At least they are now using HDR. It might be worth the money, now. But I think many will still want the big screen theater experience.... popcorn, screaming kids, having the back of their seat kicked, rustling of noisy packets....all of that fun stuff.

Ya, I can't wait to get back into a movie theater.

Hopefully, there are enough of me out there for the industry to recover once it's safe.

I went back for the first time this past week.  My daughter and I were the only ones in a large Dolby Vision theater.  It was a Tuesday night but I don't see how Theaters can survive like this.

The biggest problem is the lack of any new content and that is now a bit of a chicken/egg situation.  Hopefully, in six months if the vaccine(s) come to fruition, things will move back to more like normal.

Honestly, I don't understand the severe targeting of theaters with huge reclining seats.  Certainly more distanced than any of the several airplanes I've been on in the past few months.

Twenty or more years ago i quit going to movie theaters. I find them bad smelling, excessively cramped uncomfortable and almost always too hot or too cold. It is no fun to be made that uncomfortable just for the dubious pleasure of rubbing elbows and sharing air with a bunch of strangers. I really do not see or understand the attraction.

This simply means, for me, that I will get to see new movies a little bit sooner than I used to. For me it is really not much of a change.

The other advantage of this model is that it is easier to turn off a bad movie than it is to walk out of a theater. Also it is a LOT cheaper to watch a movie at home than it is to go out.

I wish this is the way it would remain but I am sure that there are not enough others that feel that way to make this the model ongoing from now. But I can wish.

When possible, you should go to one of the newer ones.  Completely different experience.  Large reclining seats that are assigned at ticket purchase, etc.

With my health at its current stage I very much doubt I will be able to. Also I live quite rural and the closest "newer" theater is at least 40-50 miles away and since the closes city of any size is Chattanooga it could well be over 100.

But, even if I were to be able to travel I doubt I would. A comfortable chair in an enclosed area with a bunch of strangers is not conducive to a good time for me.

I want simple things in my life and it is not simple to waste an entire evening in an uncomfortable and unpleasant environment just to view a video.

And to top it all off I would still need to be in a large group of the unwashed and mostly uneducated masses. I like people but I detest crowds. Crowds become mobs all too easily.

I went to Tenet opening weekend (Cinemas have been open since June in NSW, Australia) and there was only myself and 2 others in the theatre.  For what was supposed to be the most anticipated movie of 2020, it was a bit weird.  (the movie is fantastic)

Edit:

I should add that 90% of what the theatres are showing here are old movies.

My local multiplex has theaters that all seats are leather and electric reclining....wide too. But the leather rubs and squeaks when they recline. First world problems, right?

Local theaters in my area are starting to offer use of the mini theaters to families and friends of 12 or less.

$100 or so with pick of movie to show from a pretty good selection. One theater is even trying to get an exemption to allow groups to bring in their own alcohol (no liquor licenses).

Sounds like they are pretty hard up and just trying to keep the lights on.

I don't watch a lot of movies these days in the theater but now that I can't, I want to.  I'm really looking forward to seeing Top Gun Maverick on an IMAX screen.
I'd pay the $100 and go myself to see that.  LOL
