Patience is a virtue, especially since dolbyvision was only just recently added to the mkv specs.  And just an FYI, Plex is still fighting with it and their team is far larger than Emby's.

I downloaded a dolby vision test file directly from their test website and it played correctly on my android TV through Emby (showed the logo and my color settings were locked) but other video files with DV don't work, even in VLC on my pc. Is there a special codec required or what's going on?

ATV 1.8.55 adds the new Exoplayer 2.12.X which now supports DV within mkv files.

My Android TV Shows 1.8.54. Is this update out yet? I'm in the beta program.

You can side load from the release notes topic in the testing forum if you don't want to wait on Google.

Thanks @ebr. I sideloaded successfully but still getting errors so must be something wrong with my MKV file.

Does your mkv have the correct metadata like below?

Video
ID : 1
Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
Format profile : Main 10@L5.1@High
HDR format : Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.07.06, BL+EL+RPU, Blu-ray compatible / SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible
Codec ID : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC

It says this:

ID                                       : 1
Format                                   : HEVC
Format/Info                              : High Efficiency Video Coding

Codec ID                                 : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC

Which appears to be the same. When i start playback on my TV, I see the DV Logo in the top right while Emby is loading, but then the logo disappears and it begins loading a second time and the DV is gone when it actually begins playback. My next step is to try removing the atmos sound and wrapping it as an MP4 instead.

EDIT: Not sure if this helps troubleshoot but FFMPG is running meaning emby is transcoding instead of just streaming.

After testing I can confirm that both hdr and DV when in mkv force a transcode on my ATV while mp4 container works as intended. @ebr I disabled the middle two transcoding options on my pc server but transcoding is still happening. How can I prevent this?

If it is transcoding it is because it needs to.

That would indicate an error of some sort attempting to direct play the item.  Please send a log from the app and post in the beta section your results.  Thanks.

What profile are they?  Are they ones that are created with makemkv?  I've tested the ones on their website https://www.makemkv.com/download/dvtest/ and the p is the profile level.  5 and 7 trigger HDR on my Roku, and on my Android box.  Oddly the Mp4 files from https://www.demolandia.net/4k-video-test/dolby-vision/page-1.html trigger DolbyVision on my Roku TV but don't on Android.  BTW these are free samples so anyone can grab them and test their setups.  All samples were sourced from https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples this way people have standardized samples to test with as this is going to get messy fast.

I just came back to try Emby again.  I can not get DV to play.  I was on PLEX and that played DV just fine.  I am on the new Shield Pro and every thing is update.  Theses are MKV DV rips.  Just did them not to long ago with the new release of MakeMKV that supports DV.  Like I said same movie plays in DV in PLEX on the same device.    Any thoughts?

thanks

Okay, as mentioned here, this hasn't been released yet.  It is available in the beta version of the app. Thanks.

Sorry, not yet.  You don't have to sideload.  You can sign up for the Google beta and get it automatically.  However, I do understand if you don't want to run the beta.

Thnaks for the info.  I think for now I will stick with PLEX.  Not sure I really gained any thing that I wanted moving to Embly.    May check them out in the future.

What do you mean by that?  I'm a very basic user.  I have movies and some TV shows on my NAS,  All I use it for is local playback.
