Direct play algorithm to lowest quality, (Multiple Version)

Example,

• S01E01 - 720p (71MB) [451kbps]

• S01E01 - 1080p (235MB) [1494kbps]

 

If I limit "internet quality" to 1000kbps, TV show works as they are small sized BUT my Movies which are typically above 1000kbps will transcode. I just want the file to choose the lowest quality to direct play regardless of bitrate.

 

How do I force every playback on "internet quality" to play the lower sized version, direct play?

Or better yet, Choose lower sized version when available option.

Hi, we don't have an option for that. The movies could be transcoding for some other reason though. Did you explore the stats feature in the video player to find out why?

Let me explain it better,

When I set "internet quality" to the max 4K-120Mbps, the algorithm chooses the nearest from high to low to direct play.

When I set "internet quality" as 144p, the algorithm choose the nearest from low to high to transcode. <<< This should be direct play as well.

Changing "internet quality" from 144p to 480p-1Mbps,

There's nothing to fix. You selected 144p. That quality option comes with a max bitrate of 192 kbps and you can clearly see that the media bitrate is higher than that. You'll have to pick a higher option to get it to direct play.

If I put any higher, it will go to the next "Version" which is 1494kbps. So it won't play the 451kbps file. Also this is a TV show. Movies have higher bitrates at 3Mbps.

 

Let's say I put it at 1Mbps, my movies have 2 versions, 2500kbps and 4000kbps, it will choose the 4000kbps version due to the algorithm choosing higher bitrate no matter what..

Try picking one of the 480p or 720p options. I would think you can find an in-between that will satisfy this example.

It does not direct play anything higher than what you set as the limit. So if you put 1Mbps as the limit, anything higher will TRANSCODE without fail.

The total bitrate of the media is higher than the quality setting. Looks like everything worked as expected.

That's the bitrate of just the video stream. The total bitrate of the file will be higher than that, because it will be based on the video stream, all embedded audio streams, embedded subtitle tracks, images, etc.

Yes, but at 1000kbps setting, the smallest video directplays which is GOOD. But when I play the movie, it transcodes which is BAD. That's the main issue here. It needs to use direct play for the movie as well, that's the main point of me creating this post.

I'm sorry, what would you like me to say here? This should be pretty cut and dry, which means compare your quality setting to the total bitrate of the media file.

I realize we should probably display that total bitrate somewhere so that you can see it, so I understand that.

I see that you're still missing the point, hope I'm wrong. I'll explain again then.

1. My TV shows have 2 versions, 720p and 1080p.
2. I set internet setting to 1000kbps
3. 720p direct plays as it has a total bitrate of lower than 1000kbps
4. Now I go to my Movies at 3000kbps Video Bitrate so the minimum is 3000kbps
5. It transcodes
6. This is where I want it to Direct Play as well.

Hope you finally understand.

Then you need to raise your quality setting to something higher than that. It's that simple.

If you think you've already done this and it's still transcoding, then please attach the log files from an example. thanks.

It's not that simple, I can't increase it more than 3000kbps. If I do, the small 720p won't direct play. The priority will go to the 1080p TV which I do not want.

Sorry but It's not only Luke, i also don't understand your problem.
If you set your max. internet setting to 1000kbps then of course everything above will be transcoded. 3000 is greater than 1000! It has to be transcoded.

Do you think Emby should magically know that you like to use a higher max. internet setting for your movies only?

If you see the screenshot above, notice that 536kbps and 1499kbps between the 2 versions.

When I set it to 1000kbps, I get the 536kbps to DIRECTplay which is GOOD.

But what about my movies which are above 1000kbps, I want to direct play that too.

 

So we are dealing with 3 types of files here, please understand, i've explained so much.
