Multiple Versions - Name drop down

Recommended Posts

How are the names in the drop down generated for multiple versions?

It looks like its doing some random Right xxx characters.  Is there a way to override this?  Plex shows the pretty name + bit rate.  Could I change them with a plugin?

You need to rename your files. Try naming them this way:

  • His Dark Materials (2019) - S02E03 - Theft - Video - 4K HEVC - Audio - English AC3 5.1.mkv
  • His Dark Materials (2019) - S02E03 - Theft - Video - 1080p H264 - Audio - English EAC3 6ch.mkv

That should get them mostly how you want them. Assuming you're on Windows, you won't be able to use colons in the filenames, so you can't get it exact.

Yeah Im not going to rename my files, I use PLEX and the other way works fine for plex.  So Im looking for a better solution.

Well, it can't read your mind. What if you had alternate versions with the same formats and bitrates?

If you name them like this both Plex and Emby will do as you wish. The brackets rather than repeating the hyphens.

That area to show information isn't endless like a sea or ocean. Think of it like a pond.

You get a finite amount of space. What is there is the "difference" between those versions. The filenames are identical up to that point. It would be repeating the filename over and over needlessly impacting that pond of space you get. It would push the other details into the void because they would flow outside the space available to show that information.

Emby is doing the right thing. Your filenames on the other hand are quite long and would surely push other information farther right flowing offscreen. You get what you put in. You get what you give. You cannot expect Emby to show the entire filename over and over needleesly. It is doing the right thing keeping overlapping information at a minimum. The same thing showing in 15 different places is not an improvement.

It is hard to keep that space from overflowing the pond as is.

The name that it makes should be customizable like in sonarr etc  I said I would do it with a plugin if thats possible.  If the meta has all the data it should be a problem to say the drop down should show {name} ({year}) - {BitRate} {1080p/4K}.  Plex works fine with the current naming convention I have.

If emby is making the drop down off the file name then I would say Emby is doing the wrong thing, the file name should have 0 to do with what shows in a drop down on the UI when you have metadata to back up the file with more specific information.  Maybe if you get off your Emby horse and look at it from a end user perspective a file name should never be shown to a user lol.

If you get your media legally, you won't have this problem.

I can also use sonarr or any other program to name the files how I wish, doesnt mean emby isnt broken :P

But if Emby selected different metadata from what you want to show, you'd complain as well.  Instead Emby lets you choose what to show by appending it to the file names yourself.  Your complaint should not be against Emby for displaying what it does, but against the person who named the files you downloaded and for some reason don't want to rename to suit yourself.

(Is it that you do not want to change the names because you are seeding them from the same place Emby is using?)

Who seeds or uses torrents?  The names are custom formatted for plex has nothing to do with seeding files.  You people are dumb AF.  Plus it shouldnt matter what I name my files when the UI merges the files it shouldnt be using FileName as pick choices,  I went thru all the work to match the file and merge it, why cant the UI be smart enough to NOT show the file name?  If I name the file   EmbyIsShit and EmbyIsHorrible but match them to movies Ive now explicitly said what the data for them is, thus the drop down picker should show me relevant data from the meta, its just lazy programming.   Go look at plex, I dont see file names in the UI lol, thats just bad, if you want to see the file name you have to drill down thru like 2-3 layers to the GetInfo XML stuff.  Using a file name to populate fields is fine, but I should be able to change said field to meet my needs after the fact w/out having to change file names, thats just sad and dumb.  Again, it seems like all you Emby folks dont want change or the ability to customize stuff and are locked in to the Emby eco system.

Calling people dumb AF when they are trying to help you isn't usually a good idea.  Yes many people use torrents and it's more popular then ever. People are asking you these questions because the naming you are using is "broken" and they are trying to help you.

Those names are NOT advantageous to Plex in any manner as they use the same naming conventions we use. If you name your files correctly they will work in both systems just fine.  A bulk rename utility would make quick work of renaming the files correctly and putting them each in their own folder.

If you name your media as suggested in our Knowledge Base you won't have issues.

The current rule for episodes is all common characters are dropped.

His Dark Materials (2019) - S02E03 - Theft - 360295 - h264 EAC35.1 AMZN NTb WEBDL-1080p.mkv

His Dark Materials (2019) - S02E03 - Theft - 360295 - h265 AC35.1 BLUTONiUM WEBDL-2160p.mkv

So there will be confusion as Movies and TV Show content type do something different as Movies shows everything after " - ".

12 Rounds 3, Lockdown (2015) - 1080p 1.disc

12 Rounds 3, Lockdown (2015) - 1080p 2.disc
