Not playing next episode

Hi,

For some reason my EMBY ROKU is playing next episodes randomly. eg When I get to the end of E1 it won't play episode 2 but seems to select the next episode randomly. Is there a setting I need to tinker with?

Thanks!

How are you playing the episodes? Are you going to their detail screen and moving the cursor to the play button on screen.. or..are you pressing the play button on the Roku remote when focused over an items episode image?

Ah, I think it was because I needed to unclick the 'played' icon on the episode.

I do not think Emby will ever automatically play an already played episode. Clearly you can play a played episode if you want to but Emby will not do so automatically.

Not necessarily. How did you start playing initially?

To be honest, I'm not sure. It seems to have sorted itself out. I'll keep you posted!

Hi.  Did you turn on the option inside each of those apps' settings to automatically do this?

Then please provide details of an example.

The way the episodes queue will stop at the first missing episode. This missing episode is usually a virtual placeholder for a future airing episode. But it can also be a truly missing episode that has aired and not in your library yet. Are there missing episodes in your chronology of episodes? Or are they all there in sequence? It stops at the first missing so that you will not watch them out of sequence.

Do you have the setting for "show missing episodes within seasons" checked on the server for that library?

There are no missing episodes. However, I cannot find the setting for "show missing episodes within season". I am on Emby server version.4.5.2.0.

Hi.  Don't worry about that.  Please provide the details for an example as mentioned above.

Thanks.

I am using a Roku, latest version to play movies/Videos from a NetGear 422 server. using the Emby app. It plays all my movies, just doesn't to next one. I have attached pictures of one of the files with movies/episodes the library.

Hi.  Movies and TV shows are handled differently.  In the above example, did you setup that library as TV Shows and is everything organized and presented as Series with seasons and episodes, etc.?

It sounds like maybe a library structure issue causing identification problems.  The next episode functionality relies on Emby knowing what season and episode each of your items are.

No. I do not have this file set up as TV shows. I have everything set up as movies. I will try that. Thanks for your prompt help.

Hi,

I was selecting the episode in 'continue watching'. I believe 'shuffle' was turned on and that was causing episodes to play at random. It's seems counter intuitive that you have to click on the 'random' icon to turn it off, and displayed in red. It would make more sense to have it  automatically off until you click it to turn it on and then have the colour change?

Also, whereas in the windows app a 'next episode playing in xx seconds' message pops up with 'Start now' or 'hide' options, this doesn't appear on the ROKU app. Unless there is another setting I need to tweak?

Hi. You were in the video player or the audio player?

Video player. Although I did turn 'random' play on when I was playing music videos earlier. Maybe if you turn it on in any video library it is then 'on' in all libraries?

Hi, I've noticed this as well. For me this doesn't happen with every show. It seems to only be happening with files that are 4K HEVC (H.265). Next episodes of these shows will auto play in the android app and Apple (iPhone) app but not Roku. I've played with the video quality settings in the Roku app (from forcing much lower bitrates to allowing 2160P 110Mbps) which hasn't made any difference. So it appears to be isolated to the Roku app auto playing next episodes of video files encoded with H.265, from my experience.

From a settings perspective, Shuffle is turned off, it behaves the same no matter how I start an episode (selecting from: continue watching, next up, play all, or directly selecting an episode), the library is set to TV shows, and "play next episode automatically" is enabled in the app.

It probably is related to the same thing causing this. We are investigating both of these issues but they do sound related. Stay tuned.

Update on my situation. It appears to be playing next episode now. The only thing I am aware of changing is that I have restarted the Roku device after changing the video quality settings to allow 2160P 110 Mbps. I had tested multiple times adjusting that setting without a restart and it had no effect on the playback, I did see that it changed from Transcoding on the server to direct streaming, but no auto playback. It is now currently direct streaming and auto playing the next episode. This is with H.265 files and the Roku streaming stick. I have not yet tested with the Roku TV. The server has not been restarted nor have any setting been changed there. I actually thought an update was pushed that fixed it since this is the first time it's worked in several weeks (I have been binge watching several shows in 4k so I would have noticed if it worked before today). Thanks for investigating this, I'll post any changes or if I am able to reproduce it at will.
