cyrus104 0 Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 I am am new to Emby and am looking to use the conversion feature to create a mobile version of all of my content. I have tested it with one movie to start and the video plays as expected. The issue I am having is that now there are duplicate entries in the movies library. I would like to find a way to have them both displayed together as one item with 2 qualities. Also once this is done, how to I go about selecting the quality when I click play. Thank you!
Carlo 4561 Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 Hello, If you run a library scan these should group together assuming each movie is in it's own folder. Have you tried that?
cyrus104 0 Posted November 4, 2020 Author Posted November 4, 2020 I have tried that but the option I chose when making the conversion was to keep them in the same folder. I think it was the default option.
Happy2Play 9783 Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 (edited) What format is the media you are converting? Only time I have seen this issue is of disc rips (dvd/bluray). Have you verified where the conversions are being saved to? Edited November 4, 2020 by Happy2Play
cyrus104 0 Posted November 4, 2020 Author Posted November 4, 2020 These were bluray rips to my nas, I have all the discs still but don't want to rerip them. They are h264 mkv files originally. I just want them converted to the mobile original quality version but only one menu entry and not 2 or 3 for each movie.
Happy2Play 9783 Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 So are they disc rips or mkv files? But sounds like conversions are not being saved with original files. If you selected edit metadata on each duplicate+ item what paths are shown?
cyrus104 0 Posted November 4, 2020 Author Posted November 4, 2020 They are mkv files. The conversion files are located in the same folder with a "- mobile" added onto them. Looking in the metadata the path also reflects the same folder with the proper file name.

cyrus104 0 Posted November 4, 2020 Author Posted November 4, 2020 No, I went with the Emby default option of both the times in the same folder just with a different name.

We don't have a "default option" here as you setup your library structure in your file system/OS - outside of Emby. Can you show us exactly what this folder structure and naming looks like? In order for the multi-version feature to group automatically, each movie (and then all versions of it) need to reside in an individual folder. e.g. (from our docs): Quote Multiple versions of the same content can be stored in a single movie folder. /Movies /300 (2006) /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 1080p.mkv /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 1080p-trailer.mp4 /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 4K.mkv /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 720p.mp4 /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - extended edition.mp4 /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - directors cut.mp4 /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 3D.hsbs.mp4 Each version must begin with the folder name, followed by " - ".
cyrus104 0 Posted November 4, 2020 Author Posted November 4, 2020 Yes, this is how the conversion function in emby works by Default. I have attached a picture of the default file location, so files in the same folder.
ebr 16185 Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Yes, but how did you structure your library content when you set it up? Unless you use the structure I showed above, the automatic grouping of versions won't work. The conversion will work fine, but if you want the versions grouped, you need to use the recommended structure for the media (or group them manually). Does that make sense?
Happy2Play 9783 Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 I am still testing this but the original item will likely never conform to the multi-version naming scheme. Or are there special rules for conversions? @Luke @ebr Converting one movies, the multi-version naming requirement for original item does not appear to apply as the items were grouped. @cyrus104 But there is the Automatic version grouping plugin that can be used also.
cyrus104 0 Posted November 5, 2020 Author Posted November 5, 2020 @Happy2Play, I'll check out the plugin as that might solve the issue. @ebr, I recently converted my media player to Emby from Plex. The naming convention you mention was not a requirement in Plex for grouping like versions so none of my original content of around 10k files has it. While I might look at writing a short script to run on the entire content library, I'll probably never get around to it and look for something that's odd either more flexible or adds the flexibility like the plugin mentioned.
Luke 42081 Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 @cyrus104 have these answers helped? More automatic grouping is something we can look at exploring in future updates. thanks for the feedback.
cyrus104 0 Posted January 2, 2021 Author Posted January 2, 2021 @Luke Thanks for checking in on this post. For the time being I went back to Plex while I look into options for this. When I have a 1080p mobile version and a 4k desktop version, I couldn't get Emby to properly select which version to play based on capabilities. My phones would automatically try the 4K version and then buffer forever or tie up my GPU doing he transcoding when I wanted it doing other things. I have a much much nicer GPU and CPU with hardware transcoding builtin that I use to slowly bulk transcode my media content but getting them added in bulk is less straight forward. One of my goals is to a pre-converted version that the mobile app will download when I want to take it on the go.
Luke 42081 Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 Quote My phones would automatically try the 4K version Hi, there's an easy solution to this, just configure the quality setting in the Emby app on your phone. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.
