4 Different Music Video Displays / Missing Folders?

Recommended Posts

So so confused!  Stick with me as i try to explain and cover all the details...

Server recognizes all my available folders in the "music video" library:

Server: 13.JPG.259c022f8e9cbb8d0e46d7a5dcf007c1.JPG EMBY: 12.JPG.c5044ba57909db756b1bfd1f5b08ac3b.JPG

First off - I think i read a debate / discussion regarding only having one item in a folder some time ago.  How when viewing a library by folder view the said folder will not appear because there is only one item in the folder.  I find this to be true in theater and on the server home screen.

EMBY Music Video View                                                                                                       Server Folder

11.thumb.JPG.e991e612b10779dc96042ced8ac1d42d.JPG

This clearly shows 21 folders between 3 Doors down and Abba on the server, yet only 6 displaying in Emby?  Think if you are looking at folder view ALL folders should be there no matter how many video files are contained within it???

So moving on to my next question...  Why do i get four different displays in the music video folder view?  One that decides something is a movie another that displays correctly a third that adds everything to the pull down menu like they are different versions of the same thing and then a correct (what you would expect) view?  Every folder is set up exactly the same...  Artist->artist name - Video Title

As examples i will use my go to Roku App...

First Display:  Just This.  No Video Title Just an option to Play it...

View Two:  Thinks its a movie (i dont know but we now get chapters as an option)...

20201022_125246.thumb.jpg.cdf1189d1c53fb23715bf13217801214.jpg20201022_125301.thumb.jpg.2a6b42a2265beb032499995ae36c5454.jpg

View Number 3:  The Video Pull Down Method

20201022_125605.thumb.jpg.0ac6d2c219bd244341dd977784ef9517.jpg

The fourth view i did not take a picture of because its what is expected...  Shows all the videos for the said folder.

I am open to comments / suggestions / criticism!

do the missing folders only have one video in them? - emby does flatten the folder structure - so the mv will be in the video tab

if you are getting movies for videos - you probably have the moviedb as one of you metadata providers - i turn it off as it makes the situation worse

imvdb is almost a chocolate teapot only get at best 60% match and the artist names and song title have to match - else random stuff happens - and a lot of mv are not on the imvdb but it always returns a result - sigh

dont name your mv with artist-song name - just use song name and put each one in its own folder named the same as the song

Yes this will require more work etc - but pain will be less going forward

if you follow those basic rules - found through trial and error - then you just need to then go through and correct the 40% by hand.

did this over a week for 1800 mv - now have no problems (well almost none)

MV are one of the poor relations of emby like audiobooks and books - nothing done on them for over a year

Yes, the missing folders have only one video inside!

No doubt that music videos, audio books and to some extent music itself has been a weak point in emby!  Someday...

I like to keep the artist - title in music videos for the shuffle option.  Sometimes its the only way my weak and feeble mind knows who it is that i am listing too!  Unless in shuffle there is information available that i dont need to keep the artist name in the title.

I know there's the right way... but think its a much more difficult way than it should ever have to be.  And it wasn't too long ago when i didn't see this set up as an issue.

The moviedb has a hand in this huh...  If i keep turning off meta providers i should just go back to Windows 95 and 6.11!

just for clarity

the reason i said only name the MVs by songname is that when emby does a look up it adds the artist name to the filename

so you would have artist-artist-songname as the lookup - so makes matters worse for whats returned.

Yes its very inflexible in how you have to have things named and organised and with some work could be much easier but Luke prefers spending his time currently on another android client that does not add much to the emby ecosystem from the very small amount of info we have been given - as usual - Mushroom Management!

That client happens to have our largest audience of any of our apps.

so you say - but your focus on things is all over the map and flip flops on a regular basis

you have yet to do any real significant addition to the features of Emby in 2020 and numerous bugs and issues remain that would help users have a better experience and get to use their Media their Way

We have a team that we delegate work to and you get things as they become available. We have the server and about a dozen apps, there will always be numerous simultaneous projects in-progress, so you see one release on one platform one day, and then another for a different platform. That's just the way it is. When you do your own housework, you flip flop as well. You throw your clothes in the laundry you don't stand in front of the washer and wait for it to finish, you go and mow your lawn and do other things.

you housework analogy explains a lot - as software dev is not a random series of events that can happen in any order that are not related to each other......

as we are well off topic for this thread i will leave it there

There are a lot of pots on the stove...  I can respect that.  Up-wards and on-wards...  Things that i don't have an interest in, but at the same time it appears there must not be enough interest in  the things i do care about.

I would think that the fundamentals would at least be simple to add, intuitive and display a lot better and in a more creative way before moving on to much more complex endeavors!

And back on topic:

Does emby ignore folders containing one file?  Why do i have 4 different views when browsing folders in "music videos"?  There has to be a better way then me creating 19000+ individual folders.

Its not possible to just check to see if Music/Artist Name has a matching Music Videos/Artist Name and add the items (via short cut or whatever you guys use now days) in one location?  Like you have now, but without the need to spend weeks to get it to work with 40% accuracy?

Folders with one file are not ignored, but they may get combined into the same result with the video.

But the single file folders do not show up in folder view in music video library?  (Photo in first post)

Yeah.. I do not think we get the overview for some things we should be on the Roku. You also only get 1 display line with details. The episode line needs to be used on music videos.

Anything 5 minutes or longer will generate chapters. Maybe you want to jump into "Michael Jackson - Thriller" and skip that Vincent Price intro.. Who would though? Some people do. They dislike the beginning and the end of thriller because it is Vincent Price. But >=5 minutes == will generate chapters

The cause of that is the folder structure and not really the apps fault when that happens. The server is responsible for this.

As are we. You roll the ball. We roll the ball back. I can add all these to our issue tracker to keep eyes on these for the Roku and get these in the app.

Reference: Issue #978: Music Video type lacks consistency with expectations (3 main issues)

Ole Vincent makes the "Thriller" video better!  Couldn't understand why there is another version without it.  Did not know the 5 minute rule on creating chapters.  So that kind of makes sense, well it is doing what it is supposed to do!

I just used roku as an example!  It's an all around cluster from the server to the different apps for the most part!

Thanks for the insight and a little more knowledge than i currently had!

It isn't requested very often. That is why Music Video appears under represented. The chapters can be disabled being created in settings for that library if it is bothersome having that extra row. The fetch might not get the overview but it is under the assumption this is like Home Video and won't be auto-scraping any metadata. So to the majority of users that overview would just be filled with empty space. But the artist and song titles should be shown on Music Video. It is under the assumption it is like Home Video and those get a single item line. It is just the small details that need ironing out. To separate Music Video from Home Video more cleanly. That is what the apps will need to do to get there.

Certain religious groups think his "demonic" chanting before and after Thriller is like Witch Craft. You might cause an incantation and a demonic spirit might claim your soul. I am being 100% serious. You cannot fault a person on their belief. You can create another version that doesn't offend their belief. Michael Jackson was ahead of his time in that area. Appeal to everyone even if you have to make several versions of the same video.

It's like the plague!  I can tell when i post something in detail, showing the issue (but barely any replies from the folks in the know) that its an obvious item that needs addressed but not important enough at the time (due to the lack of users) in resolving the issue.

Having a dedicated music videos library mimic the settings of the home videos library seems like something that was kind of thrown on the wall to see what would stick.

Thanks again for your reply.  Guess its a case of it is what it is till further notice....
