Creating BIF files when media is added

I've got it set to create thumbnails when media is added, because it seems easier, but: it seems to treat this as priority one when a new movie is added, not bothering to scrape metadata until after the BIF is created. Is this what it's doing? Is there a reason for that? Why can't it scrape simultaneously, or before the BIF file is created, seeing as how the BIF creation is the lengthier process?

Hi, Do you absolutely need this turned on at time of adding media?  Can you not wait until the nightly process runs and builds the bif?

That doesn't address my question though.

I personally don't know the order of what's done first or last on a particular show or movie but it makes ZERO difference to the process.

Each step needs to be done so it's mostly irrelevant and you're waiting for ALL processes to complete per show.  BIF creation will take longer then the couple ms lookup times.

As mentioned just turn off real time bif generation if it bothers you or if you're going to be adding a few dozen things at once.  You can manually kick off the job as well from schedule tasks once all the shows/movies have been loaded.

It doesn't make zero difference, because you can't edit the metadata or artwork until the movie is scraped. If it gets scraped first, I could edit metadata and artwork while the BIF is created, instead of having to wait for it.

Which is exactly what you can do by triggering the BIF creation manually after scraping.  Sure, it could be handy if it worked that way round automatically, but it's really not hard to start one process in a list when it suits you.  Less work than the metadata editing is liable to be.

It's not overly hard, no, but it's harder than it happening automatically.

The process spawns ffmpeg to do the jpeg extraction - so unless it's doing this at top priority (I doubt it) then it's running in parallel with the other tasks.  So if you 'really' wanted to immediate edit metadata - then there is nothing stopping you doing that.

Personally I wait until the nightly batch run to create the BIF's - but if you do want them quick, then there is nothing to stop you changing the schedule to say every 30 mins.

My bif's are generated in a matter of seconds. What. GPU do you have?

If you are editing the metadata and artwork, turn off the the metadata providers and just let the BIFs get generated by Emby.

You could turn that off as well and create then yourself, manually.

bif generation does not use the gpu - cpu only - it would be slower with gpu anyway

each movie takes a few seconds on a modern pc - but using a NAS with generally weak cpu's it will take a lot longer - the price you pay for putting emby server on a low power NAs and expecting things to happen the same as a powerful pc. NAS are designed as file servers first - media servers are an after thought at best and promoted by marketing types for the average consumer to believe.

You can't edit the metadata before it exists.

I'm editing it, not creating it from scratch.

Specifically I was adding the 4K Star Wars sequels and giving them sort titles.

Do whatever works for you.
