CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 Hi. I set up Jellyfin to experiment with IPTV and I'm wondering what Emby could offer that Jellyfin doesn't. I'm assuming it would be more stable but the interface looks exactly the same in the server dashboard. So generally, what are some things that Emby has? And specifically, Jellyfin's Roku client doesn't have a guide at all, does Emby? I did some searching and didn't find a recent comparison of just Emby and Jellyfin Live TV functionality. Thanks!
Luke 42079 Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 Hi, yes our Roku app does have a Live TV guide. 1

CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 7, 2020 Author Posted October 7, 2020 That's kind of what I'm asking about, things I probably haven't thought of yet. Maybe I'll just buy a month and see for myself eventually. Thank you.
Carlo 4561 Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 Hi Charlie, That's probably the very best thing you can do. Nothing like being able to test things side-by-side.
TheDetective 0 Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 One major advantage Emby premiere has over Jellyfin right now is offline sync for mobile devices, which doesn’t work, at least on iOS devices, with Jellyfin. You also can’t transcode down to lower quality downloads with Jellyfin to save space. Also, Jellyfin provides no guide data, but that comes with Emby premiere. Schedules Direct is $25 a year. If you bought Emby Premiere lifetime for $120 in five years time you’d end up paying more for Jellyfin’s TV guide.
Carlo 4561 Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 Emby Connect, CloudSync, Transcoding that works and did anyone say useable apps on almost every platform.

Jellyfin is working as expected on Android TV but Emby with the same settings is shuffling channels in the guides on Android TV and Roku but not the web app. Pretty frustrating experience so far, something is borked and there are so few settings related to Live TV that I'm going in circles with it. Another issue is that scrolling through channels on Roku is kinda slow so I'm not sure how practical this will be without being able to enter channel numbers. Seems like navigating a large channel list would be pretty slow anyway, am I missing something like a page-down shortcut? Emby on Android TV seems smoother, but Jellyfin wasn't bad on there either.

Scrolling on the Roku is animated so you can watch the focus rectangle move around and not lose your place. The docs suggest this is a feature. They also animated moving down rows slower than other devices. Again I think this is so users do not lose their place. If it moves too quickly when scrolling it feels too bouncy. Like you pass the place you want to go and have to back up. Then you backed up too far have to move ahead. When it moves at a regular pace when holding the button you feel more comfortable. Roku did serious testing on this hand in hand with Netflix on the earlier boxes. That scrolling animation speed is their constant. You cannot deviate.. some users wish it was faster. But it is that way for a purpose. https://community.roku.com/t5/Roku-Developer-Program/MarkupGrid-Scroll-Speed/td-p/436130 Could employ something like this. Then it would progressively scroll faster and faster the longer you hold the button. But it will get bouncy. Edited October 14, 2020 by speechles
CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 My guide order was not ideal originally in Emby and now its fixed, server side. However, the Emby apps on Roku and Android TV are staying messed up while the web interface is fine. It's like the apps are caching the old guide data / channel order and refuse to update. I tried "Reset Settings" in the Emby app on Roku and I'm not sure that function works at all because it loaded the same bad guide at a pace that I don't think came from my server (seemed like local cache speeds). Is there a way to force a guide refresh in the apps? Why would channel order be different on the apps than in the browser? Trying to give Emby a fair shake. 3 hours ago, ebr said: Yep try the FF and Rew buttons on your remote. Roku scrolling in general is slower than most other devices. TY, that helps a lot! 36 minutes ago, speechles said: Roku did serious testing on this hand in hand with Netflix on the earlier boxes. That scrolling animation speed is their constant. Maybe Roku should add a Life Alert button to the remotes.

CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 (edited) pumping delete button over and over eventually got it. Edited October 14, 2020 by CharlieMurphy
CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 I can't even use this forum, maybe I'm just too stupid to use Emby. It has the quotes from the last post and I don't see where to purge it. The channel order is shuffled on Roku and Emby but not in the web browser, same user. Where do I delete the server side channel order for myself so I can start fresh? Thanks for the help.
ebr 16184 Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 Hi. Can you please show us an example? What sort order is chosen in the guide?
CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 I don't see where to set a sort order option at all in Emby on Roku. I think I must just be too frustrated to see anything but red at this point. In Firefox, my channels are sequential. On Roku and Android TV, same user account, they are not. Firefox guide channels start at 1000,1001,1002,1003.... and so on. Roku and Android TV start at 1045,1046,1158,1401,1156...

On Roku when using the guide we haven't gotten the "on screen" toolbar ribbon yet like the grid. You need to press * to open the guide settings. You can change the order on that panel among other things. Edited October 14, 2020 by speechles 1
ebr 16184 Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 Hi. Press the "*" key on your Roku remote to bring up options. That is the universal key on the Roku for options. What is the sort set to? 1
CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 (edited) Okay, I didn't hit * because there is an options "gear" at the top right so I assumed it would take me to the same options. This is a step in the right direction maybe. Sort by channel number unchecked "place favorites..." Honestly as I change settings, nothing at all happens to the guide. is there a key to refresh it? Edited October 14, 2020 by CharlieMurphy
ebr 16184 Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 Go anywhere that causes a scroll. Real time refresh after an option change doesn't appear to be working right now. 1
CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 I reset the app again and came back in, now it responds but it's even more messed up. Selecting sort by channel order shuffles the channels again. Setting to date played actually puts the first 5 in order but as soon as you scroll to the second page, it's completely shuffled again.
CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 (edited) Is there a way to kill Emby's memory of guide preferences? toggling "favorites at the beginning" on and off has fixed the sorting on Roku! But I just got here and have no favorites set at all. Edited October 14, 2020 by CharlieMurphy
CharlieMurphy 92 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 Okay, I went back to Firefox and told it to put favorites at the top so I could un-favorite them. I was assuming that I had set some favorites by accident. I had no favorites set. I can't explain any of this but maybe it's fine now? Thanks for the help, I'm frustrated so I'm probably not at my best. I'm going to walk away from it and come back later with a better attitude. Thanks so much for the support yall!
