Carlo 4560 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 Ahh ok so this isn''t related to the recent update. If you were on 4.4 nothing from an Emby standpoint would have changed that could cause this that I know of. I a couple of plugin updates for DLNA but wouldn't apply if not casting using that. Are you playing back new files or are these you KNOW played fine previously? Let's pick one device for now. What Emby client is used for your main TV? Smart TV app or on a device?
myjunkmalebox 8 Posted September 25, 2020 Author Posted September 25, 2020 I only have one setup, Android phone with Emby app to CC on the TV. As far as I know there were no updates or changes made to anything. Yet this volume thing is very noticeable and new. Maybe Android updated something in the background? After I noticed the volume issue, I went back and tested with episodes I watched previously, they also showed this issue.
Carlo 4560 Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 How does playing Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime play when CASTED to the CC from your phone?

Carlo 4560 Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 Do you have any media that has 2 channel audio as well as surround? If so play them switch the audio track to see if there is a volume difference.
myjunkmalebox 8 Posted September 25, 2020 Author Posted September 25, 2020 not sure, how do I tell, how do I switch?
Carlo 4560 Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 Look at the detail screen for you video and it will show you the audio tracks. During playback in the OSD you can select/change the audio track if there is more than one.
myjunkmalebox 8 Posted September 26, 2020 Author Posted September 26, 2020 Looks like the shows I have only have 1 track. Most of them are stereo, one as 5.1. I don't see any options to change tracks.
Carlo 4560 Posted September 26, 2020 Posted September 26, 2020 OK that's fine. Stereo should never be a problem. I was just wondering if you had some sort of issue with surround sound tracks loosing volume which isn't the case with stereo.
myjunkmalebox 8 Posted September 26, 2020 Author Posted September 26, 2020 This morning we noticed two episode of the same show with wildly different volumes. Logs attached. Furturama S6E11 has normal expected volume, on the dash board it shows as 'direct streaming'. The other episode S3E5 shows as 'direct playing' and is very quiet. Had to add 30 points to the volume to match the first episode. When playing the files in vlc locally there is only a slight difference between their sound levels, if I wasn't looking for it, I wouldn't have noticed. loud and quiet.zip
Carlo 4560 Posted September 26, 2020 Posted September 26, 2020 Sounds like your issue is media related. Any chance you could post 5 minute samples of both files someplace to download?
myjunkmalebox 8 Posted September 26, 2020 Author Posted September 26, 2020 It's also odd that some video's that used to be fine are now really quiet. No idea how to do that.
Carlo 4560 Posted September 27, 2020 Posted September 27, 2020 (edited) If this was an issue in the software I'd imagine people would be chiming in left and right. That's why it seems like it's a setting somewhere in your system that is contributing to this. Edited September 29, 2020 by cayars
myjunkmalebox 8 Posted September 28, 2020 Author Posted September 28, 2020 That makes total sense, but I don't know what settings to look at, or even what exists to check. Any one else have ideas of what to look at, or something I can do to force proper behavior?
Carlo 4560 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 This is probably something that will just take time trying different things. If it were me I'd get out paper and pen and go through setting on my TV and Device. I'd write down the current settings before making and change/test so you can easily reset things. Likely this is a process of elimination which could end up being of no help, but you don't know until you look. I have one TV that "remembers" the volume per HDHI port. But it never remembers correctly and cuts my volume by 1/3 or so. So I turn that feature off which gives me quite a bit more overall volume. You could have something like or maybe some type of "dynamic audio compression" . So with issues like this, after I write down settings I'll usually try to turn off anything that is supposed to be helpful or does some type of additional processing.
myjunkmalebox 8 Posted September 30, 2020 Author Posted September 30, 2020 This isn't a TV problem, I never change inputs, all video goes through CC. I literally don't use my TV for anything else other than Emby/YouTube through the CC. Lets say I set the volume to 20. One video will be just fine, and anther will have no audible sound at all. Without changing anything I'll play a video I watched previously with volume in the 20ish area and it will be so quiet it's unwatchable. I have to increase the TV volume up 60 to be able to watch it. Something changed in Emby or CC or my phone to cause this to start happening. I've looked at the things I can find, I'm not sure what else could or should be looked it.
Carlo 4560 Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 And for you 4.4 is "loud" while 4.5 is "soft" in volume correct? I personally haven't experienced this and can run both versions on the same machine to test back to back. To be fair I don't have a CC but have multiple Android devices with CC built in and that could be the difference as well.
myjunkmalebox 8 Posted October 1, 2020 Author Posted October 1, 2020 > And for you 4.4 is "loud" while 4.5 is "soft" in volume correct? No, the issue was found on 4.4. When I went to investigate I noticed the server wanted to restart to go to 4.5, so I let it do that as restarting is was one thing I wanted to try. The restart and upgrade did not affect the behavior.

If you didn't notice it until 5 months after that server release it is highly likely that something else changed somewhere to cause this.

myjunkmalebox 8 Posted October 11, 2020 Author Posted October 11, 2020 Having done nothing but let time pass, the issue seems resolved. I haven't changed anything. It's just back to normal now. I went back and re-checked a few videos and it seems fine now.

I am using beta 4.7.0.17 and a user complained yesterday that they can watch one TV episode and the next one would have a volume difference. They are using FireTV. So I asked other users using FireTV and they said the same, but they just changed the volume when it happens. Would be nice to have some volume leveling in the transcoder. I use the default audio boost=1 and all shows are transcoded due to bandwidth. I will try audio boost=1.5 and see it it makes a difference with users Please post beta issues in Testing section as they are not related to any stable release. 1
