Emby Tower 34 Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Hi, since a long time I've got a problem with my SD content. In "Next up" and "Continue watching" the thumbnails are 16:9 (which is correct), but inside my season lists, the thumbnails are 4:3. How can I correct this (but only at 16:9 content)? Screenshots attached!
Luke 42077 Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 HI, what is the original aspect ratio of the thumbnails?
Emby Tower 34 Posted August 31, 2020 Author Posted August 31, 2020 (edited) The videos are 16:9! Edited August 31, 2020 by Emby Tower

Happy2Play 9780 Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Is that a screen grab from Emby or a image from a provider?

Deathsquirrel 745 Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 (edited) I have the same issues with distortions of 4:3 thumbs in the Next Up section. It happens in at least the browser UI, ET, and Android TV. They are stretched to 16:9. Edited August 31, 2020 by Deathsquirrel
pwhodges 2012 Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 This has long been a mess, and when a particular type of image is corrected, the rest of the wrong ones are left wrong because they weren't pointed at that day. This is an example of a 4:3 series, added during the present beta round, so not too long ago. The images are from TVDB. First the series screen: Here the "next up" images are stretched to 16:9 from their correct 4:3. Now the season screen: Here we see the same episode displayed correctly. Lastly the episode screen: The main image is stretched; the "more from" images are stretched; but the chapter images are correct (but that may be luck, as I have a 16:9 film which I reported months ago with chapter images that are incorrectly squashed to 4:3, probably because the pixels are not square - PAR is 64/45, as is common for DVD rips). Anyway, leaving that aside, the tally in this case is three types of image wrongly stretched and two displayed correctly. Paul
Happy2Play 9780 Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Isn't the Next Up row landscape/16:9 (Home Screen and Series level) no matter the images aspect ratio? "Next up" and "Continue watching" normally have a provider thumb from say Fanart (image with logo always 16:9) Now Series actually presents a Episode image via "Next up" but it is alway 16:9 also for the "cardPadder-backdrop".
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 since I'm thinking about it I'm just running all my episode thumbs through a photoshop macro to solve the issue...but it would be nice if it weren't needed.
Emby Tower 34 Posted September 1, 2020 Author Posted September 1, 2020 I never use thumbs from THETVDB, because I don't like the TV stations branding in the pictures.

Given that the same image is displayed in different aspect ratios in different places, I don't suppose that will help much. Paul

Paul If all your source images are 16:9 you don't have a problem in any place I've tested. The macro in question sets all my images to 16:9 by adding bars where needed. Not pretty but prettier than stretching 4:3 images to 16:9.

Emby Tower 34 Posted September 2, 2020 Author Posted September 2, 2020 Back to Topic: Is it possible to let Emby create the thumbs in correct aspect ratio?

Emby does create the thumbs in the correct aspect ratio, does it not? Are these Emby created or downloaded from a Metadata provider?
softworkz 5066 Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 This is a veteran bug about thumbnail generation for anamorphic (SAR: 720:576 == 4:3; DAR: 16:9) videos. It is fixed internally but the fix hasn't made it into beta yet. 1
pwhodges 2012 Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 (edited) The images I posted above show that the thumbnails of 4:3 PAR 1:1 videos are also not displayed consistently. Is a fix for this part of the fix for the anamorphic issue? Paul Edited September 2, 2020 by pwhodges

Paul I'm always focusing on the OP. And the OP has posted the MediaInfo screenshot indicating that the video is anamorphic. If you have a different issue, please create your own topic. Thanks. I can say for sure that you'll benefit from that fix in some way, because one of the test-videos that I used for verifying the fix was kindly provided by yourself
pwhodges 2012 Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 4:3 images are often displayed stretched to 16:9. The tally on these screens is three types of image wrongly stretched and two displayed correctly. I suspect that when 4:3 images are mixed with true 16:9 ones in the "next up" or "more from" rows there is a desire to keep things "nice" by forcing them to fill the same space. But while this might be happen for movies, there's no reason for it in the case of series which are generally all the same aspect ratio. Paul
pwhodges 2012 Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 Yes, I realise that - thanks! (I've made a separate thread for the simple 4:3 stretched to 16:9 matter.) Paul 2
