djpillz 1 Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 Hi, I tried to go through other posts to find my solution but I can't find anything like my issue anywhere. If anyone knows please point me in that direction. So basically I have an intermittent issue with my Emby that I can't figure out. I'm using a older desktop PC with Ubuntu on it. I can start casting something to my TV, and then close Emby. I re-open Emby and it gives me the menu to click on my server, add server etc. If I try to connect I get "Connection Failure". If I turn off my wifi and turn on my data, connects perfectly to my server. Other people are currently streaming from it and I cannot connect to it from my local network. I connect back to my local wifi and it gives me the "Connection Failure" error. I try and connect from another device and same result. If I go physically restart the PC it works fine again. Does anyone know how to fix this? It normally works fine. I don't know what just suddenly happened. @cayars
Carlo 4561 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Hi, mind if I ask a few questions to get better feel for what's happening? What TV do you have that you're casting to? Are you casting from the PC using a web browser? Is this your server? If so does it run in your LAN or is it remote?
djpillz 1 Posted August 30, 2020 Author Posted August 30, 2020 Hi, I have an old LG LED TV that has a Chromecast hooked up to it. Mainly what I use, also have an older Samsung Smart TV that also has a Chromecast - I cast to both Chromecasts. No I am 99% of the time casting from my phone (Pixel 4 XL). I also use my Samsung Galaxy Tab A here and there to cast from. Yes it is my server, it is running in my LAN. Remote connection works fine, I can be at my work and it work fine, I can turn off my WiFi on my phone and open it up via my mobile data no problem just seems to be a local connection issue.
Carlo 4561 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Ok so your situation is that you're using your Android phone to browse for something to play. Find something and cast it one of the Chromecasts. Shut down the app on the phone, then can't connect back to your server again while it's casting? Does that sound correct? Can you connect back ok once it's done casting? Can you connect to your server from a different device while the phone is "locked out"?
djpillz 1 Posted August 30, 2020 Author Posted August 30, 2020 Not necessarily. I could come home from work and no be able to connect to the server. I've noticed it does do it in that scenario though as well where I have closed the app and that has occurred as well. No, it will just stay like that until I reboot the physical machine. Even if I reboot Emby in the dashboard it doesn't work. The physical machine has to be restarted. No, I have tried other devices, as long as you are connected to my LAN during this time frame the devices cannot connect to the server unless they are on an outside (remote) connection.
Carlo 4561 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 That sounds like it's something in the OS and not in Emby if an Emby server restart doesn't help. What else do you have running on that machine?
djpillz 1 Posted August 30, 2020 Author Posted August 30, 2020 Nothing it's literally a dedicated server.
Q-Droid 989 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Does the Emby dashboard show the correct LAN and WAN access links? Is the link for LAN IP or hostname?
djpillz 1 Posted August 30, 2020 Author Posted August 30, 2020 Yes, they both show correct access links. The link is LAN IP
Q-Droid 989 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Have you tested with browser and wired clients and if so were the results the same? I'm inclined to agree with @cayars that this sounds like a host and/or network issue. 1
djpillz 1 Posted August 30, 2020 Author Posted August 30, 2020 Yes, used a wired PC to try and stream and received same result. I just bought a new router it comes in tomorrow I'm going to swap that out. I'm starting to think it's a network issue. The host was just formatted about 2 months ago and nothing else is really installed on the machine other than Ubuntu. I noticed late last night my Chromecasts were acting weird as they were not viewable on my network and I mentioned it to my girlfriend this morning she said it was like that earlier in the day as well until she power cycled them so I'm really thinking it may be a network issue.
Q-Droid 989 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Funny you say that. My Chromecast devices were acting weird for me recently and router reboot fixed it, at least for now. I wouldn't have really noticed except that I updated the router and after the restart the Chromecast(s) popped up. I don't use them all that much.
Carlo 4561 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Hi, Keep us informed if you notice any difference after the router upgrade. I too have heard other comment what Q-Droid has said!
djpillz 1 Posted August 30, 2020 Author Posted August 30, 2020 LOL they can be finnicky devices. I use my daily and love them because they're so basic I taught everyone in the house how to use them with ease. I definitely will keep you guys posted. I should have the router in Monday, Tuesday at the latest - will update you guys then. Thanks for all the help!
Q-Droid 989 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Have you restarted the router you have now? It's worth a shot if you haven't already.
Luke 42078 Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Is embyserver.exe still running when this happens?
djpillz 1 Posted August 31, 2020 Author Posted August 31, 2020 2 hours ago, Luke said: Is embyserver.exe still running when this happens? Good call - it is not. How do I force that to start again or make it keep running? Why do remote connections still work just fine though too?
