1971camaroguy 32 Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) Currently I have my movie files stored in it's own properly named movie folder, along with metadata and then they are genre folders, then by decade released For example Action > 1980's > Top Gun or Comedy > 1990's > Bio-Dome I am wondering if it would easier to dump all of my movies into one large folder called Movies...doesn't matter genre..all together in one giant folder Then let emby do the sorting since movies cross genres anyways,,might be easier to manage that way Edited August 24, 2020 by 1971camaroguy

With the beauty of metadata, you can have Emby view your media in many varying ways with different filters and views. Keeping all movies together in one folder is much easier to maintain going forward.
Ronstang 294 Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 I agree with seanbuff. I have multiple stores of movies on different drives with no organization. My movies are added as I get them so the drive they are on is the one with space at that time. With metadata I let Emby do the organizing. I create collections of things I want grouped together and use genre or other tags to choose what to watch. I'm fairly new to using Emby to watch my movies so I'm sure I will develop a more sophisticated system over time.
rbjtech 5285 Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Let the database do the work for you and put them all in one area - or multiple areas under the same library if you have multiple storage areas. for example - library 'Movies' contains - c:\Movies1, d:\Movies2,e:\Movies3 Then you can SEARCH and FILTER however you see fit across all the Movies. One thing I would be wary of is folder/file naming - try and keep to the standards in the KB article here - https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159102-movie-naming In summary - use \<movie name>(movie year)\<movie name>(movie year).<file extension> This will give you the greatest flexibility later on when you may want to add multiple versions in different resolutions for example of the same movie.
1971camaroguy 32 Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 Thanks, I started moving everything to one folder, it's actually going to help me with empty folders and duplicates too. I am running drivebender with a large storage pool and duplication so I have one movie folder in drive F. Yeah I def have the correct naming structure, I use media center master to rename my movies and folders and it puts it in that structure Thanks for everyone's input
skidmarks 199 Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) One main movie library is the way to go. But i did break a few genres out to their own library... 3D Documentaries Comedy Stand Up Holiday Music and Music Concerts Stuff that i don't want to see mixed in with the main movie library. Folders for Movies, TV Series, Documentaries, Animation. If everything is named correctly and\or tagged correctly the software should be doing the genre sorting for you.
DarkKniyt (John) 6 Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 I have gone the following route; Movies 3D Movies TV Series TV Series Ended Music In the 3D Movies folder I place movies in as follows; Alita (2019)\ Alita (2019) - 3D.mkv Alita (2019) - 4K.mkv Alita (2019) - 1080.mkv
