SlvrYeti 1 Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 Are there any Emby clients that can transcode DTS? I've a Sonos home theatre system that doesn't support DTS and would like Emby to transcode only the audio of files from DTS.

When the client doesn't support DTS, Emby converts it on the server to a compatible format with the client
ebr 16169 Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 Hi. vdatanet is correct. Please let us know if that answers your question.
SlvrYeti 1 Posted August 20, 2020 Author Posted August 20, 2020 Ahh so there is no option to tell the server to transcode all DTS tracks?

SlvrYeti 1 Posted August 20, 2020 Author Posted August 20, 2020 I'll test it with Emby and see. This doesn't happen with Plex. It still sends a DTS signal/track to my device which isn't supported.

vdatanet 1617 Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 If the video is compatible, the power required to convert DTS to AC3 (or compatible) is negligible. In some cases extra power may be required, for example VC1 + DTS. Although the device supports VC1, converting DTS to AC3 also converts VC1 to H264.
sooty234 266 Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 I'm familiar with what the server does. But the question was quite specific in asking if there were a client that can do this. And the answer is yes. When the server transcodes the audio, it's unpredictable. Sometimes I get mp3, sometimes I get AAC and sometimes I get AC3. With no option to choose what I want. I disagree with this. There needs to be consistency for it to be reliable. As is, the standard is too low to be viable.
rbjtech 5284 Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 The problem may lie in the fact that the emby client will be querying the TV, not the Sonos which likely be connected by ARC. So if the TV can play/passthough DTS, emby will try and play it direct but of course the Sonos will not be able to... On the client, there needs to be a way to FORCE emby to transcode DTS for the soundbar's that do not support DTS.

rbjtech 5284 Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 To add - I haven't tested this directly myself, but on the Nvidia Shield - you have the option to select/deselect sound CODEC's. I would imagine, that if you de-selected DTS - then Emby would automatically transcode. I can test this for you if you are interested ?
SlvrYeti 1 Posted August 20, 2020 Author Posted August 20, 2020 I tested it with Plex and it sends 2.0 Stereo unfortunately

Have you actually tested the scenario you pose above?
rbjtech 5284 Posted August 20, 2020 Posted August 20, 2020 (edited) Good news - It appears to work just fine If I go into 'Advanced Sound' settings and set it to Manual - then deselect all the codecs except AC3 and EAC3 - reboot the shield. Now if I play any video with a DTS track, Emby transcodes to AC3 (5.1) - Stats for nerds confirms this and my receiver reports this as DD (Dolby Digital) and it's definitely 5.1 sound. I tested on 5 or 6 videos, and they all transcode to AC3/DD ok. To note - this is not using ARC, it's Shield > Receiver > TV - but I don't see any reason why the TV should not just pass the AC3 (received from the Shield) to the Sonos via ARC ? I do not believe Emby queries the ARC connected device - it queries the primary device - in this case the TV - which is going to report 'passthrough' for DD/DTS. If it queried the Sonos, then you wouldn't have all these DTS problems ...

I think you are making a lot of assumptions that we don't have any evidence for but happy to be proven wrong (by an actual case).
SlvrYeti 1 Posted August 20, 2020 Author Posted August 20, 2020 Hmm Sonos says it is Stereo 2.0 with Plex and I don't have a shield to test it with anymore. Do I get another I wonder.

What device do you know of that doesn't support both mp3 and AAC? And most devices will now also support AC3. I've had the server give me mp3 on a device that supported both AAC and AC3.

Many devices do not support AAC beyond 2 channels - especially as inputs. 6 minutes ago, sooty234 said: How are you connecting to the Sonos? All of his experience so far is with a different system. We'd probably be best to wait until he actually test with Emby.
