Shortcut to files in another folder

I am wondering if it is possible to use a regular shortcut link to have a movie file accessible in two folders.

Example: I have a movie in a collection folder ( hellraiser in hellraiser collection), but I would also like to have a link to it in the ‘Last Drive-In with Jo Bob Briggs Season folder without having to have two copies of the movie on my sever. Is there an easy way to accomplish this?

thank you for all you do,

Hi.  Why not use our Collections feature that doesn't depend on physical location?

Shortcuts won't work.  Junction points and similar functions used to but, as EBR noted, this is entirely unnecessary now.  You should be using the built in collection tool.

You also should not be using physical collection folders any longer.  That on-disc method of dealing with collections was deprecated several years ago in favor of the new virtualized collections.

A question about collections - Can access restrictions be applied at that level? Like a young kids stuff collection and an older kids stuff collection with common media between the two. Then keep the young kids to the young kids stuff only?

That sounds like it is better suited for separate libraries.

Collections are visible if any of their contents are but, of course, only the visible contents would show.

Ok. This is why I mentioned strm files. They facilitate media "links" across libraries following access rules for each individual library.

Still shouldn't need strm files for that.  Just create one library and, with a little bit of physical organization, you can use the location access rules to tailor that library to different users.

That doesn't help with his need to have the same movie in two different libraries.

That's good to know. I had seen those options in one of my libraries with multiple paths but did not give it much thought.

The example I had in mind was more along the lines of having a "guest" library which specific users could access, but nothing else. Since Emby doesn't have the option of temporary access using one-time share links and I don't want to copy or move the media files around then strm files in the "guest" library would get me close enough to that goal. So different scenario from the above.

Q-Droid, What ebr mentioned would likely be the perfect solution for what you want to do with a bit of disc reorganization.

The kids example or the guest example? Kids example, yes. Guest example, I don't think so.

I was thinking the guest library actually.

So for example:

c:\library\guestmovies
c:\library\othermovies
c:\library\guesttvshow
c:\library\othertvshows

Now in both movies and tv shows you have two mount points but under access control can have the guest account with only access to the "guestmovies" and "guesttvshow" folders.

Your full users would get access to all 4 mount points as usual.

I see. The reorg part is what I'd like to avoid. If someone in my family tells me they want to watch and/or share any of our existing media with a remote friend I don't want to have to copy or move things around from their permanent locations. If it's someone I don't know well or at all then I don't want to give them access to the libraries either.

Not sure exactly what you want to do with the guest access.  If the intention is to only give access to a few movies or something like that maybe just add a tag "GUEST" to those items and then set the guest user account restrictions to only allow use of item with the GUEST tag.  This way it's all controlled from Emby and no disc reorganization is needed.

Thanks for that. I hadn't thought of using tags to manage the access. Bit of a duh moment...

TY ebr I will give that a try, I still use actual folders for my collections since they are already set that way and they have a Library and primary view is folders. its just easier to keep them that way since I have over 2500 titles in those folders, but I will most certainly try this way as well.

My one question is will they play together well?

Thanks loads, will check back shortly.

Thanks again,

Ice
