upsnowman 1 Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 I'm a lifetime Plex member and have just recently started testing Emby because Plex is getting too bloated and adding things I don't care about. I'm loving Emby so far but I am curious. It seems like Plex is getting updated like once a week for fixes, enhancements ect but it doesn't appear that Emby ever gets that many updates. Is it because it's more stable then Plex or just not getting features that no one cares about?
pwhodges 2014 Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 The beta channel gets updates varying between a couple of days and a week or more - it depends on the scale of the work being done, especially on new features or major enhancements. Emby's preference is to keep the released version as stable as possible; only major regressions get an update in the stable channel. Also, I dare say that the staff working on Emby are fewer... Paul
ebr 16193 Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 Hi. Perhaps Plex is busy adding all that "bloat" you don't want :). We do have constant development efforts and those are usually seen in beta channels fairly frequently. We try to manage our regular releases of both server and apps at around 3 months but some are more frequent and some are less. Welcome!
Sammy 790 Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 You should have been here a few years back when Emby was going through enormous growing pains and there were a lot of releases. Now it has matured but as mentioned, the beta channel gets a good number of them every month on the way to the next release.
Gilgamesh_48 1240 Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 Perhaps Plex updates more often because Plex is more buggy than Emby. Actually, since I use the Emby beta server, I find that the updates are plenty often enough for my tastes. On average Emby updates about every 7-10 days. There have been longer gaps but that is about normal for my usage. Then again Plex really does have a larger number and frequency of bugs that creep through development and even through their betas. The problem is that Plex does not really listen to reports from their beta testers or anyone else for that matter. Plex believes that they can do no wrong whereas Emby at least admits to being mostly human and, sometimes but rarely, making mistakes. 1
