Emby Server Died with Windows 10 2004 Update

Recommended Posts

I just installed the Windows update, and my Emby Server is gone.

Am now re-installing and adding libraries.  My genres are gone....

No small thing - 4,000 movies.

Not good.  Any others with this problem?

Some of the genres came over, not all...

With 4000 movies, the initial library scan could take a while.

Be aware that not all metadata (including Genres) may be available while the scan is in progress.

Have you verified that the library scan completed successfully?
Settings > Advanced > Scheduled Tasks > Library

All of the genres did come over, but so far not all of the movies within the genres.  The scan ended a while ago, but I think the genres continued to be assigned after the scan was said to be complete.  Thankfully all was not lost.

I'm still rebuilding libraries, and the opera titles are even more complex.  Will see...

Thanks!

I'm on 1903 and nothing compels me more to stay there then reports such as this.

That said, has anyone else had issues with Emby after updating to 2004? I've heard of various driver issues but this is the first time I've heard of an issue with Emby.

If Emby Server was installed in the users profile directory (which is I understand the default) - then I could see how the 2004 may blow it away given the issues surrounding this release.

Personally, I have never liked installing 'programs' under user profiles - so I've always created separate folders from the root - thus any Microsoft updates should leave them alone and did in my case as the 2004 update went perfectly smoothly on all my Emby servers ...

I updated my dedicated Emby machine to 2004 this morning, and there has been no issue at all.  Emby is installed in the user profile in the default manner (it is installed in the administrator user as this runs as a dedicated server).

I have updated five other machines (not running Emby server) over the past couple of months, all with no issues, except one case where an audio driver that is unsupported and only works in Windows 10 with an unofficial patch needed to be reinstalled and repatched - but that was expected.  If I used the nVidia patch for number of hardware transcoding streams I would check if that needed reinstalling or updating.

How do you force the installation here? Do you create the folder first at c:/(Program Folder) then select that folder on installation? Right now is probably a little late to do for Emby but might not be a bad idea for the future.

I use this and my guess is it would be nuked but who knows?

I wouldn't call that a big issue though - it just needs to be checked and fixed if necessary.

Use the 'portable' install and then you can install wherever you like.

The rebuild has been pretty quick, though there are gaps in some movies that I had my own genres assigned (Foreign, French, etc.).  It's odd in that many or most of those genres came over, but not all.  It seems like my selected images did not all come through - though at least some did.

I have movies, concerts, educational course up so far.  I still have TV shows and music (large collection) yet to go.

Have you configured Emby to save metadata locally with the media itself? This would speed up library rebuilds in future.

.. but will slow down metadata screen loading.  I keep all my metadata local on SSD drives, these are far faster than any physical disk and associated network I/O.

Well you could keep your CACHE library on the SSD so that once loaded would be fast.

I guess - but in my install, for the sake of 12.5Gb for the non-cache'd directories (with +2Gb for the cache) imo it's not worth the effort - put it all on SSD - the db especially.

where the C:/ drive is a 1Tb m.2 drive?

In your setup that would have all the temp and cache stored on SSD.

And I like it that way! Load times are pretty darn fast but at times I wish they were even faster!

Have you though about putting your Emby server behind Cloudflare?

No but tell me more.. I do like the K.I.S.S principle.

One of the really nice things Cloudflare can do for you is cache all your posters and graphics which makes app fly especially when using your system remotely as they are delivered via a CDN network.

I even use my domain name from inside my own lan and can get the graphics delivered quicker from Cloudflare then locally.

Do you have your own domain name?

I do not have a domain name. I use a free ddns from noip.com for my static IP address. I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible but how much does Cloudflare and a domain name cost you? If I did this, I might have to call my family and start charging them a fee!

You can use the free Cloudflare version (I do) and a domain name is pretty cheap.  You can do this without a domain name but it's so much nicer with one.

Try going to one of the domain registers such as namescheap.com and see if you can find a domain you like.  sammy.tv is taken btw. :)

I use a domain that has the TV extension just because it kind of goes with Emby.

I'll make you an offer.  If you can find a domain you like don't purchase it yet.  I want to do a walk though article for the knowledge base so I'd help you set the whole thing up in Teamviewer if we can take pictures (we'll overwrite any personal info). So the article would cover firewall forward rules, purchasing a domain, setting the domain up in Cloudflare, pointing it to your system, generating SSL cert in Cloudflare, converting the cert to the type Emby needs including an auth password, setting up Emby to use Cloudflare along with a couple of tweaks/rules used in Cloudflare to boost performance.

We can chat via PM if you are interested.
